Nablus (IINA) – A Palestinian toddler was killed and his parents and four-year-old brother were injured in an arson attack on two homes, carried out early Friday by Israeli settlers in the village of Duma, south of Nablus, in the West Bank.
"The child Ali Saad Dawabsha died after his home was targeted and burned by settlers. His father, Saad, mother, Reham and brother Ahmad also sustained a third degree burns. They were taken to hospitals in Nablus for treatment," Ghassan Douglas, a Palestinian official in charge of Settlement File in the West Bank, was quoted by Palestinian News Agency WAFA as saying.
Douglas confirmed that the settlers attacked the two houses of Saad and Mamoun Dawabsha, located on the outskirts of the village, with firebombs and flammable materials and spray-painted racist slogans in Hebrew such as “revenge”.
The Palestinian Presidency said it held the Israeli government "fully responsible” for the crime committed by the Jewish settlers.
Presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said that this crime would not have happened without the insistence of the Israeli government to continue settlement construction and protecting the settlers in the West Bank.
He added that this crime is a direct consequence of the international community's silence and decades of impunity given by the Israeli government to terrorist killers.
Abu Rudeineh stated that this crime will be at the forefront of the files to be submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to sue all those involved in this crime of unspeakable cruelty.
"The verbal condemnation of these crimes by the international community is no longer acceptable" he said, adding that  practical steps are required to bring the criminals to accountability, and to end the occupation.

Aden (IINA) - The exiled Yemeni government has issued an order for militiamen fighting alongside loyalist troops against the Houthi militia be merged into the armed forces, as clashes raged Wednesday in the country’s south.
The supreme defense council, which met in Riyadh Tuesday, decided to “assimilate members of the Popular Resistance into the units of the armed forces and security forces,” the government-run news agency said. The meeting, headed by President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, took the decision to reward them for their “brave contribution to defending the homeland.”
Popular Resistance units were formed when the Iran-backed Houthis and their allies advanced on southern regions after they had overran the capital in September. Meanwhile, clashes raged in the south, where pro-government forces expanded their area of control after recapturing the port of Aden, Yemen’s second city, after four months of fighting.
The loyalists pushed back rebels in Lahoum, on Aden’s northern outskirts, following heavy fighting in which 12 rebels were killed, military sources said. Three pro-Hadi fighters were killed and dozens wounded, medical sources said.

Jerusalem (IINA) – The United States has confirmed that it continues to view Israeli settlements as illegitimate and strongly opposes steps to advance construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
"We are deeply concerned about the Israeli government’s announcement today of the advancement of nearly 300 new housing units in the West Bank settlement of Beit El, as well as hundreds of new housing units in East Jerusalem,” State Department's Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said in a press statement late Wednesday evening.
"Settlement expansion threatens the two-state solution and calls into question Israel's commitment to a negotiated resolution to the conflict," Toner said, urging the Israeli government “to refrain from unhelpful actions that undercut the possibility of a two-state solution".
The Israeli government's approval on Wednesday to immediately construction 300 homes in Beit El settlement in the West Bank attracted widespread condemnation from the international community.

New York (IINA) - The Israeli government has announced the "immediate construction" of some 300 new units at Beit El in the occupied West Bank as two illegally constructed buildings were demolished in the same area after a court order. The United Nations, European Union and the United States condemned Wednesday's announcement.
"After consultations in the prime minister's office, the immediate construction of 300 homes in Beit El has been authorized," Netanyahu's office said on Wednesday, adding that planning for another 504 homes in annexed east Jerusalem had also been approved. According to the statement, the 300 units had been promised three years ago following the demolition of other homes in the Beit El settlement. Earlier, settlers clashed with Israeli police as bulldozers demolished the two structures built on private Palestinian land. A senior Palestine Liberation Organization official denounced the plans to build new homes as "war crimes" and accused Israel of sabotaging peace efforts.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon said "settlements are illegal under international law, an impediment to peace and cannot be reconciled" with Israel's "stated intention to pursue a two-state solution," his spokesman said in a statement released in New York. A spokesman for the EU also said the decision called into question Israel's "stated commitment to a negotiated two-state solution in the Middle East peace process". US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said "settlement expansion threatens the two-state solution and calls into question Israel’s commitment to a negotiated resolution to the conflict". "The United States continues to view settlements as illegitimate... We continue to urge the Israeli government to refrain from unhelpful actions that undercut the possibility of a two-state solution," he said in a statement.
The latest approval came after the Israeli High Court upheld a demolition order for the two structures. The complex was deemed illegal because it was under construction without prior Israeli authorization. Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker reporting from Beit El said the two building housed 24 apartments that had no residents in. "They (buildings) were not ready. They were empty but it is usually symbolic for the settlers here. We had a standoff with police early in the day and that got quiet violent but now things are relatively quiet," Dekker said.
The military moved in and removed protesters holed up inside, but hundreds of Jewish settlers gathered at the scene and some fought with Israeli forces, who responded by firing water cannons at the protesters. The new units announced by Benjamin Netanyahu's office are both in Beit El and elsewhere, including areas in east Jerusalem, which Israeli leaders say are inseparable neighborhoods of Jerusalem. The Israeli government says these neighborhoods will remain a part of Israel under any future peace agreement, but the Palestinians consider them settlements and say construction there is illegal, a position backed by the international community.
Israel captured the West Bank and east Jerusalem in 1967, and annexed east Jerusalem in a move that is not recognized internationally. Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of a pro-settler party, welcomed the announcement of the new units even as he criticized the top court's decision. "The court's role is to judge; the government's role is to build," he said in a written statement. "We will build up the land of Israel, but in a legal and appropriate way."

‘Strong evidence’ of Israeli war crimes in Gaza: Report

Thursday 30 Jul 2015 - 13:42 Makkah mean time-14-10-1436

London (IINA) - The Israeli army indiscriminately and deliberately targeted civilians during a brutal 2014 assault known as "Black Friday", according to a new report on last summer's Gaza war.
The joint study by Amnesty International and Forensic Architecture, released on Wednesday, cites "strong evidence" of war crimes and possible crimes against humanity on August 1, 2014, as Israeli forces bombarded residential areas in Rafah in retaliation for the capture of one of its soldiers. "There is overwhelming evidence that Israeli forces committed disproportionate, or otherwise indiscriminate, attacks which killed scores of civilians in their homes, on the streets and in vehicles and injured many more," notes the report. "This includes repeatedly firing artillery and other imprecise explosive weapons in densely populated civilian areas… In some cases, there are indications that they directly fired at and killed civilians, including people fleeing."
The report relies on hundreds of videos, photos and satellite images that were analyzed and cross-referenced with eyewitness testimony. It catalogues the events of August 1-4, 2014, when a scheduled humanitarian ceasefire was derailed after Israeli soldiers clashed with Hamas fighters in Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza. Two Israeli soldiers and one Palestinian fighter died in the ensuing firefight, and Hamas fighters captured a third soldier, Lieutenant Hadar Goldin. Israel responded by implementing the "Hannibal Directive", a controversial order that allowed soldiers to respond to the capture of their comrade by "unleashing massive firepower on persons, vehicles and buildings in the vicinity of the attack, despite the risk to civilians" or to the soldier himself, the Amnesty report noted.
The directive hinged on the belief that Goldin was better off dead than in the hands of enemy fighters. More than 1,000 bombs, missiles and shells were fired in Rafah within a few hours on August 1 alone, according to an Israeli military inquiry report. "Public statements by Israeli army commanders and soldiers after the conflict provide compelling reasons to conclude that some attacks that killed civilians and destroyed homes and property were … motivated by a desire for revenge - to teach a lesson to, or punish, the population of Rafah," the report stated, citing evidence that the attacks "were serious violations of international humanitarian law and constituted grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention or other war crimes."

Paris (IINA) – Forty-four percent of French people believe the Muslim community is a "threat" to the country’s national identity, according to the results of a recent opinion poll carried out by Ifop polling institute and published by the French news site Atlantico.
"This poll, conducted in mid-July, demonstrates that one out of two French people holds negative perception of Islam and Muslims at the moment," said Ifop’s Jerome Fourquet.
He explained that the survey allowed respondents to choose one answer from among three possibilities to see whether the Muslim community is a "threat to the country", "cultural enrichment factor", or "neither one nor the other".
The survey results revealed that only 19 percent of respondents see the presence of a Muslim community in France a factor of cultural diversity, and 37 percent said it was neither a threat to the country’s national identity nor of benefit to its culture.
Fourquet affirmed that supporters of the French Far-Right Party participating in the opinion poll showed more negative views of Muslim community, given the fact that 90 percent of them confirmed that Muslims are a threat to the country’s identity, compared to only 2 percent who believed that they were a factor of cultural enrichment, whilst eight percent did not agree to either answers.

Jerusalem (IINA) – The Israeli forces on Wednesday prevented children attending summer camps in occupied Jerusalem from entry into Al-Aqsa Mosque, prompting them to stage a sit-in at the gates of the Mosque in protest.
The area surrounding Bab al-Silsila – one of Al-Aqsa Mosque main gates – was overshadowed by high tense atmosphere, after the Israeli soldiers pushed away some female protesters, to ensure the exit of settlers from the Mosque. This was followed by closing al-Silsila gate to worshipers with barricades. The Israeli soldiers also closed Bani Ghanim gate to the worshipers.
The Jewish settlers renewed on Wednesday their storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque through Bab al-Maghariba, escorted by the occupation police guard, while the worshipers stood against the provocative tours of the settlers in Al-Aqsa courtyards, by chanting the Takbir shouts.
Meanwhile, the Israeli police prevented a Jewish settler bride, in her wedding dress, and groom from breaking into Al-Aqsa Mosque through al-Maghariba gate, to “bless their wedding" inside the Mosque.

Brussels (IINA) – NATO voiced its “strong support” for Turkey on Tuesday following an emergency meeting of the alliance's executive body, Anadolu Agency reported.
Speaking at a news conference after the meeting, called for by Turkey following attacks by Daesh and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said: “In the meeting, there was full agreement on the statement and all allies expressed their strong support for Turkey and we all stand together united with Turkey.
In a statement released following the meeting in Brussels, the North Atlantic Council said it had discussed the threats against Turkey and passed on condolences to the families of 32 people killed in last week’s bomb attack in the southern town of Suruc, as well as those of police and military members killed since the July 20 bombing.
“Terrorism poses a direct threat to the security of NATO countries and to international stability and prosperity,” the statement said. “It is a global threat that knows no border, nationality or religion – a challenge that the international community must fight and tackle together”.
“Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations can never be tolerated or justified. The security of the alliance is indivisible and we stand in strong solidarity with Turkey,” the statement added.
Following the Suruc attack, which has been widely blamed on Daesh, police and soldiers have been killed in attacks by the PKK and Daesh, leading Turkey to launch airstrikes in Syria and Iraq over the weekend.

Israel takes control of illegal homes in West Bank

Ramallah (IINA)- Israeli authorities have taken control of illegal homes being built in the occupied West Bank, prompting clashes between Jewish settlers and Israeli border police.
Tuesday’s protest was staged against the demolition of the so-called Dreinoff buildings, which were built on private Palestinian land that was seized by the Israeli army in the 1970s. The demolition of the homes was ordered last month by the Israeli High Court, stating that the houses must be removed before July 30. Using riot gear, the Israeli forces took control over the two buildings under construction early on Tuesday, heralding a showdown with dozens of young Jews who barricaded themselves in one of the structures in the West Bank settlement of Beit El near Ramallah. "A border police unit on Tuesday took control of the Dreinoff buildings ahead of their demolition as ordered by the High Court with the aim of avoiding violence during the operation," an Israeli military statement said.
However, following the clash of the protesters with the police, dozens of settlers were forcefully evacuated, where some of them were arrested. "The situation, the feeling here is very very bad, and we hope that our representatives will really do something quickly," said Pesach Sabich, a settler from Beit El. The evacuation took place after an Israeli human rights organisation petitioned the High Court on July 26 together with Palestinian land owners to cancel the planning guidelines and block any construction on the Dreinoff Compound.
On the other hand, there has been further legal manoeuvring by the Israeli defence ministry to circumvent the orders of the High Court and prevent the demolition.
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli prime minister, said on Tuesday his government opposes the decision of the High Court to demolish the buildings, according to a statement from his office. Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law. The Israeli government disputes that position. The ongoing building on the lands of the occupied West Bank is perceived as additional complications to peace negotiations and further impediments in forming an independent Palestinian state.

Anti-Muslim parade draws criticism in Sweden

Wednesday 29 Jul 2015 - 11:07 Makkah mean time-13-10-1436

Stockholm (IINA) -  An unofficial gay Pride parade organized by a right-wing nationalist is planned for July 29 to run through a predominantly immigrant neighborhood with a large Muslim population.
The event is making the headlines in the country and globally for all the wrong reasons, Al Jazeera reported. Pride Järva, is organized by Jan Sjunnesson, a former editor-in-chief of Samtiden, a web-magazine owned by Sweden Democrats, the anti-immigration party that became the third largest political party in the Swedish parliament following 2014 general election. Sjunnesson is also the editor of website Avpixlat, often described in mainstream Swedish media as a xenophobic and far-right website.
The planned parade has attracted criticism from the official Pride organizers, Sweden's LGBT federation and anti-racism groups. They believe the agenda behind this parade organized by the far-right is to try to provoke Muslims in the predominantly immigrant areas. In a joint official statement released to Al Jazeera, the official Stockholm Pride and the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (RFSL) said they were distancing themselves from the initiative. "Jan Sjunnesson has during a long time made himself known as a person who's spreading hatred towards Muslims on social media who's not supporting LGBT rights.
"The magazine Expo published, in February, a compilation in which they, among other things, showed how Sjunnesson, with positive comments, had shared an American film where Muslims were described as paedophiles and homosexuals and a "Satanistic threat against society" who should be deported," the statement said. Sjunnesson, a 57-year-old father of one, said that he rejected the claims that he is "homophobic" and "racist"
I am not homophobic, the media made these remarks about me. I used to be bisexual, now I am married to an Indian woman, so I am not racist either," he said. "However, I am against the Islamization of Sweden." Sjunnesson says the leftist media has been very critical of the parade which they say its "provocative". "I don't think there is anything wrong with that! I think it's good to be provocative and have an element of surprise," he said.
Sjunnesson said the plan is to have a fun and peaceful parade which about 100 people are expected to attend. He believes it is time to bring the Pride Järva to areas other than central Stockholm, and that is why he chose to have it in these areas. "I chose the area because I think we should be able to parade anywhere and we should not allow the Islamization of Sweden to grow and stop us from what we want to do," he said.
Annika Hamrud, a journalist, believes Sjunnesson is staging the parade for attention and publicity, and the media is buying into it. "The organizer has a history of making homophobic statements in the past, and he was expelled from SD for being too extreme. He is using this as a platform to make it more antagonistic between the LGBT and the Muslim community," she said. Hamrud said: "There are so many areas in the capital that have never had the Pride parade, why not go there, why isolate the event by holding it in an area that is too far from the main parade?"
She concluded that the parade is called Pride because people are supposed to parade with pride in the heart of Stockholm, not in isolated areas. A counter parade is planned on the same day, according to a post on the Facebook page of the Anti-racist Pride Park March. Emelie Martensson, organizer of the counter parade, says 800 people have registered to attend. They intend to meet the parade at the finishing point in Husby. "When the racists and Islamophobes want to use LGBT as a tool we have to unite and say NO," said Martensson. The counter parade will turn their back at the alternative pride parade once they pass their area and after that the entire group will head to the park where everyone in the community from all walks of life can be together

Hijab-wearing women are being ‘turned away’ at Egyptian resorts

Wednesday 29 Jul 2015 - 10:57 Makkah mean time-13-10-1436

Cairo (IINA) - Many Egyptian women say they are facing a difficult summer season as Hijab-free zones seem to have soared in popularity, as more restaurants and high-end resorts enforce a de-facto ban on wearing headscarves, Al Arabiya News reported.
Social media users in Egypt flocked to Facebook and Twitter over the past week to condemn the apparent decision by some venues to deny veiled women entry. Many deemed the ban as “discriminatory” against practicing Muslim women in Egypt — a country in which 90 percent of its 80-million population are Muslim. The ban is not completely new, it was reportedly common at resorts and restaurants frequented by foreigners, in cities such as Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada. Recent reports suggest that several swimming pools and restaurants at five-star resorts lining the Egyptian north coast are also restricting the entry of veiled women to their services.
Several veiled women who were rejected at the door spoke to Al Arabiya News and described the act as a ‘violation of freedom.’
Reem, a 28-year-old woman who wears the hijab, said she was turned away at the doors of two different beaches at upscale north coast resorts for being veiled, she said. “I was with my husband when I was told I cannot come in because I’m veiled. “The outing was quickly cut short when the security at the door told me guests complain about the appearance of veiled women,” she added. Reem said such door-selection policies are never written. Sally Nashaat, a 26-year-old mother of two girls, said she was also not allowed to enter a beach club house at a five-star north coast resort for being veiled.
Among a group of friends, she was told: “Everyone can enter, except her. “It feels degrading, we are in our own country and we are not happy. “I was about to cry,” Nashaat said, “no one has the right to deprive me of entering. This never happened to me anywhere else, even in the United States. “Some friends told me to take it off on the day, but I refused. Do I have to take it off to enjoy entry to such places?” Nashaat said in some beaches that permitted access to veiled women, she was allowed to sit on the beach wearing the “Islamic” swim suit but not into the swimming pool.
An “Islamic” swim suit is commonly known as a full-length lycra outfit that covers the whole body except for the hands, face and feet.
“I was told I cannot enjoy swimming while being covered,” Nashaat said. Furthermore, Reem said it was ironic that these restrictions were imposed on veiled women when Egypt was an Arab state with a majority of Muslims. “I don’t want to be stopped for being veiled. I don’t want any of us to feel ashamed. We are not doing anything wrong,” she added.
Dina Sherbini, who owns a chalet at an upscale resort in Ain Sukhna, about 200 km east of Cairo, told Al Arabiya News she was threatened by staff members if she swam wearing an Islamic swim suit. They threatened “they would throw excess chlorine in the water” and that they would “shut off fountains and Jacuzzi in the pool,” Sherbini said. When she bought the chalet three years ago, Sherbini said, nothing in her contract mentioned that swimming while covered was unacceptable in the resort.
“It was allowed before but now they changed their mind. What can we do now? Neither myself or my daughters are now allowed to swim.” Sherbini also recalled a recent incident where the same administration refused to sell a friend of hers a unit at the resort for being veiled.
When asked if a ban imposed by venues on hijab-wearing women was lawful, Egypt’s Tourism Ministry spokeswoman Rasha Azaizi told a talk show Sunday that the ministry had not “issued any instructions or decisions in that regard.” She reportedly demanded citizens to file complaints to the ministry against hotels or resorts that impose such bans. However, forbidding veiled women from enjoying some beaches or restaurants is not seen as a problem by everyone. Those who argue against the policy say it violates the Egyptian constitution, which prohibits actions that discriminate between people or against a sect due to gender, religion or belief. Others believe privately owned establishments are free to have their own rules.
Mervat Tallawy, the head of Egypt’s state council for women, said Egyptian law did not regulate on such issues. Tallawy added she does not view such acts as discrimination, adding that each establishment has the right to impose its own dress code. “An establishment that prevents hijab-wearing women is just like any other that would ban a man for not wearing a suit,” she said. “There are resorts that provide women-only beaches. We cannot tell them why you are not allowing men to come in.” Tallawy said some establishments are trying to “maintain their interests”and “keep up with a certain image” which “must be taken in consideration.” “We do not want to blow the issue and hype it, let’s discuss the new planet discovered by NASA.”

Libyan court sentences Qaddafi’s son Saif to death

Tripoli (IINA) - Libyan court on Tuesday sentenced slain dictator Muammar Qaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam and eight other defendants to death for crimes during the 2011 uprising.
Former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi and Qaddafi's last Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmudi were also among those sentenced to death. Saif al-Islam was not in court because he is held in the southwestern hill town of Zintan by militia opposed to the Tripoli authorities. The trial, which opened in the Libyan capital in April last year, has been dogged by criticism from human rights watchdogs and an unresolved dispute with the International Criminal Court in The Hague over jurisdiction in the case of the Qaddafi son.
The 37 defendants were charged with crimes including murder and complicity in incitement to rape during the 2011 uprising that toppled the dictatorship. Saif al-Qaddafi's ICC lawyer condemned the Tripoli "show trial" and labeled it a "judicially sanctioned execution." Meanwhile, the U.N. human rights office said it was "deeply disturbed" by the verdicts and sentences. The militia holding Saif al-Islam is loyal to the internationally recognized government which fled to the remote east last August when a rival militia alliance seized the capital and set up its own administration.
Saif al-Islam's sole appearances before the court have been by video link and there have been none since May last year. Most of the other defendants are held in the capital, but some are held in Libya's third city Misrata which is loyal to the Tripoli authorities. The U.N. Security Council referred the conflict in Libya to the ICC in February 2011 amid Qaddafi's repression of the popular uprising against his decades-old regime at the height of the Arab Spring.
Saif al-Islam is wanted by the Hague-based court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. ICC prosecutors say that as part of his father's "inner circle", he "conceived and orchestrated a plan to deter and quell, by all means, the civilian demonstrations against Qaddafi's regime". He has been held in Zintan since his capture in November 2011 despite repeated ICC demands for Libya to hand him over for trial. Charges before the Tripoli court also included kidnapping, plunder, sabotage and embezzlement of public funds. Human rights groups have expressed concerns about the trial, criticizing the fact that the accused have had only limited access to lawyers and key documents.

Malaysian PM Razak dismisses deputy premier amid corruption scandal

Kuala Lumpur (IINA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has sacked his deputy in a cabinet reshuffle after Muhyiddin Yassin had called on the leader to explain a growing corruption scandal at debt-laden state investment fund 1MDB.
Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin had said at the weekend the ruling coalition could lose the next election if Najib and others did not better manage issues stemming from the scandal at 1Malaysia Development Berhad, which has debts of more than $11billion. Muhyiddin has been replaced by Home Minister Zahid Hamidi, a right-wing politician well-liked by members of the United Malays National Organization party, which has led Malaysian coalition governments since independence in 1957. "The decision to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was very difficult, but leadership is about doing what you think is right," Najib said in a speech on Tuesday."Nevertheless, I thank Tan Sri Muhyiddin for all his work and dedication to the government and country, as I do all those ministers who are no longer in the cabinet."
The official Bernama news agency reported on Tuesday that Najib also sacked Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail, who was involved in investigations into corruption allegations related to the Najib-linked company. The prime minister, who launched 1MDB in 2009, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Najib told his deputy and other officials on Monday to stop commenting on the scandal at the investment fund, saying arguments among leaders would erode support for the government.
Muhyiddin had repeatedly backed mounting public calls for Najib to answer allegations that hundreds of millions of dollars of 1MDB money had gone missing in complex overseas transactions that have never been fully explained. The Wall Street Journal reported this month that Malaysian government investigators had discovered that nearly $700m had moved through government agencies, banks and companies linked to 1MDB before ending up in Najib's personal accounts.

Cairo (IINA) - A fire that erupted at a furniture factory, east of Cairo, has killed 25 workers and injured 22 more, according to Egypt's health ministry.
A security official said a preliminary investigation indicated that the blaze started when a gas cylinder exploded as it was transported in an elevator. Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, health ministry spokesperson, said 22 more workers suffered from burns and smoke inhalation in the blaze at the Al-Helw factory on the outskirts of Cairo, the Associated Press reported.
Egyptian state-run media said the factory in the city of Al-Obour had not obtained a government safety certification. Local media reported that firefighters gained control of the blaze by the afternoon with the help of about 20 fire tenders. Abdel-Ghaffar said in a statement that the victims were taken to local hospitals, which declared a "state of emergency" to deal with the casualties, state media said.

Rabat (IINA) – The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) strongly condemned Tuesday's terrorist bombing in the Sitra area, south of the Bahraini capital, Manama, killing two policemen, and wounding several others. One of the victims sustained serious injuries.
"This terrorist act of which the Bahraini security authorities confirmed it was carried out under the guidance of a third party, and that the explosives used in the attack were of the same type that were recently intercepted coming from that party, is a heinous crime that must be condemned by the international community,” ISESCO said Tuesday in a statement obtained by the International Islamic News Agency (IINA).
ISESCO added that those responsible for the attack must be held accountable, and the individuals involved in it as well.
The organization called for the "the determined and concerted efforts of all member states in the face of all forms of terrorism, whether masterminded by deviant individuals, or under the guidance of an irresponsible third-party who aims to spread chaos and unrest in the region, in violation of international peace and security”.
ISESCO reiterated its “solidarity with the Kingdom of Bahrain in its fight against the abhorrent terrorism and sectarianism targeting its security and the safety of its people”.

Ankara (IINA) – Turkish Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the violation of the Israeli police and settlers on the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
"The actions of Israeli police are unacceptable as they caused a state of anger in the minds of all Muslims and increased the state of tension in the region," the ministry said in a statement, calling on Israel to put an end to such illegal actions against Al-Aqsa Mosque as soon as possible.
Director of Al-Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Omar al-Kiswani explained that the Israeli Minister of Agriculture participated in the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque with about 120 settlers, and that the incursion was carried out in batches, under the protection of the Israeli police.
The guards of Al-Aqsa Mosque had stood on Sunday against an attempt of Israeli settlers to break into the Mosque on the anniversary of the so-called  "destruction of the Temple", triggering clashes in which dozens of Al-Aqsa guards and Palestinian worshipers sustained injuries with rubber bullets, and cases of suffocation due to teargas.

Philippine president asks parliament to pass Muslim autonomy bill

Tuesday 28 Jul 2015 - 12:37 Makkah mean time-12-10-1436

Manila (IINA) - Philippine President Benigno Aquino III asked Congress on Monday to pass a Muslim autonomy bill at the heart of efforts to end a bloody rebellion in the country’s south and another that aims to lessen the stranglehold on power of entrenched political families.
In his final state of the nation speech before he steps down in 11 months, Aquino summed his administration’s achievements in battling corruption and poverty — his campaign battle cry in 2010 — and thanked just about everyone who backed him, from his late parents, who are revered democracy champions, to his hairstylist. Among other concerns he raised was the increasingly tense dispute with China over contested South China Sea territories. He called on Filipinos to unite as their country confronts China, which he did not identify by name. “Our adversary, is by any measure, way ahead whether in terms of influence, economy or military force,” Aquino said in the nationally televised address. “But on the basis of reason and love for country, we’re not lagging behind.”
One of Aquino’s expected major legacies, a peace deal with the largest Muslim rebel group in the country, stalled early this year when some of the rebels from the 11,000-strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) got entangled in a clash that killed 44 anti-terrorism police commandos in southern Mamasapano town. The brutal deaths sparked public outrage and prompted lawmakers to delay passage of a bill crafted to establish a more powerful and potentially larger autonomous region for minority Muslims in the south of the predominantly Roman Catholic nation. The Moro rebels dropped their separatist bid in exchange for broader autonomy. But the delay has set off concerns that some impatient rebels may resume armed hostilities in the south, where smaller but violent armed groups like the Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf, continue to carry out kidnappings for ransom, bomb attacks and other acts of banditry.
In a surprise turnaround, Aquino told Congress he now backs long-unsuccessful attempts to craft a law that would restrict the number of members of influential families who can run for public office. Anti-dynasty bills, however, have not had any luck in Congress, which is dominated by millionaires who have carried the family names of dominant political clans to public office for generations.
Aquino belongs to an entrenched and wealthy landowning clan which has held power at various levels in the northern province of Tarlac. His late mother, Corazon Aquino, was catapulted to the presidency after helping lead the 1986 “people power” revolt that ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos. “I was opposed to depriving a person of the right to run for office just because of his family name,” Aquino said. “But I thought there’s also something wrong with giving a corrupt family or individual a chance to wallow in power for life.”
On Aquino’s watch, the economy grew an average of 6.3 percent, the best 5-year record in four decades. But growth slowed to 6.1 percent last year, and could be further dampened by worries over the changing of the guard in 2016. Critics also say few jobs were created. The Philippines raised revenues to record levels by fixing tax leakages and cutting red tape, leading credit rating agencies to raise its debt to investment grade status.
Now Aquino wants to ensure his policies endure. Aquino, barred by law from a second term, is likely to announce this week Interior Minister Manuel Roxas as his party’s candidate for the May 2016 election, even if surveys show he has little support. “The next election will be a referendum for the ‘Straight Path’,” Aquino said in his speech. “You decide if the improvement we are now enjoying will become permanent, or will be considered just luck and a momentary recovery from a long history of failure.”
He stopped short of endorsing Roxas, the interior and local government secretary, as presidential candidate, but said critics sought to put him down because he was competent.
“In their continued efforts to discredit you, your critics have proven that they are afraid of your integrity, skill, preparedness for the job,” Aquino said in a speech lasting more than two hours. The polls will pit Roxas, who faced criticism over government mishandling of relief efforts after supertyphoon Haiyan left nearly 7,000 dead or missing in 2013, against Vice President Jejomar Binay, who is battling graft charges. Roxas ran for vice president in 2010 but lost to Binay, who topped surveys for presidential candidates until recently.
A few hours before Aquino spoke, left-wing activists, laborers, farmers and students carrying his effigy and calling for his resignation clashed with riot police amid a downpour as they tried to breach a barricade of barbed wire and shipping containers. Several policemen and protesters were injured when authorities used water cannon to push back the activists, who hurled rocks and bottles at the police, according to police and Red Cross volunteers.
Calling Filipinos his “boss,” Aquino said he was not perfect and acknowledged that some government officials have failed him at times. Aquino is expected to endorse a candidate for next year’s presidential elections soon. He suggested that the polls would show whether Filipinos support his reforms and urged them to choose a candidate who would continue them.
“Will everything that we have invested, everything that we have labored for, vanish in just one election?” he asked. “In this perspective, the next elections would serve as a referendum for the ‘straight path,’” a phrase he coined for all his reforms.

Jerusalem (IINA) – The Supreme Presidential Commission for the Affairs of Churches in Palestine denounced the storming and desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Jewish settlers and Israeli occupation forces.
The Commission held Israel's government, the occupying power, responsible for the violations, and demanded that there be no recurrence of such heinous attacks on the sanctity of the place.
The Commission strongly condemned the Israeli racist measures to impose tight restrictions on the entry of Palestinians under the age of fifty into Al-Aqsa Mosque, while at the same time, allowing groups of settlers to break into the Mosque, organize provocative tours in its courtyards and to assault the guards and the worshipers in it.
The Commission called on the Arab states and the international community as well as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Al-Quds Committee to act urgently to protect Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites, and to put an end to these blatant violations of the international law. It also warned against the serious dangers threatening Jerusalem through its Judaization and isolation from the West Bank, changing its demography.
The Commission further called for international prosecution of the Israeli occupation authorities for the heinous crimes that targeted the temporal and spatial division of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Dublin (IINA) – Irish Muslims marched on Sunday in “Not In Our Name” protest against the so-called Islamic State (IS), rejecting the murder of three Irish citizens in Sousse, Tunisia, last month.
"There is a small minority of Irish Muslims who identify with IS, but we need to prevent them from spreading their lies," Dr Sheikh Umar Al-Qadri, the imam of the Al-Mustafa mosque in Blanchardstown who helped organize the protest, told the Herald on Monday, according to On Islam website.
"There are silent supporters of extremism. We must isolate all those who do not condemn terrorism and who choose to remain silent. I believe that anyone who remains silent on these terrorist activities is somehow supporting terrorism," he added.
The rally in Dublin's city center comes one month after the attack on a beach in the Tunisian resort town of Sousse, in which 38 tourists, including three Irish people, were killed by an IS militant.
Organized under the banner of the Muslim Peace and Integration Council, the “Not In My Name” march aims to show that the “murderous campaign” by IS terrorist group is “absolutely against the teachings of Islam.”
The Council had distributed invitations to take part in the demonstration across the country.
Muslims make up 1.1 percent (50,000) of the 4.5 million people in Ireland, whilst two decades ago they numbered 4,000.

Makkah (IINA) - The Haj Ministry will next week start receiving on-line applications from both Saudi and expatriate domestic pilgrims for low-cost Haj amid objections from the local 207 Haj service-providers.
The ministry, on its part, said it has completed all procedures to receive applications according to the charges that will serve the interests of both the pilgrims and companies. The companies, however, said the charges decided by the ministry are too low to meet the cost of accommodation, food, transport and other services. The ministry is offering domestic pilgrims three options for the low-cost Haj starting from SR6,000 and going down to SR3,000.
According to the ministry, those who opt to be accommodated in tower buildings and five-star hotels in Makkah, travel by air and move between the holy sites in buses and the train which can accommodate up to 135,000 pilgrims should pay SR6,000. The second category should pay from SR3,000 to SR5,250 to be accommodated in Mina in tents classified from A to F and will be using buses for transport in addition to the train which can transport up to 50,000 pilgrims.
The third and last category can pay only SR3,000 but pilgrims will be accommodated in various buildings in Makkah and will be transported by buses and the train during the days of Tashriq (the second, third and fourth day after the Eid). The train’s capacity for this category of pilgrims is 5,000. The ministry said interested pilgrims can apply through its electronic gate on the Internet. A six-man sub-committee of the National Haj and Umrah Committee is expected to meet soon to decide on charges which are acceptable to both parties.
Osama Filali, committee member and Saad Al-Qurashi, a former member, are optimistic that the meeting will come up with solutions that meet the aspirations of the pilgrims and Haj companies at the same time. They said the committee will be considering a number of studies and proposals on the subject before recommending concrete suggestions to the ministry

Jerusalem (IINA) - A Palestinian wanted on suspicion of planning a militant attack fell to his death from a rooftop on Monday as he fled from police in the occupied West Bank, Israeli police said, an account disputed by a witness.
Israeli forces have killed three Palestinians in the West Bank in the past week in raids that they say foil attacks. A police spokeswoman said the man, identified by Qalandiya residents as 19-year-old Mohammed Abu Latifa, ignored paramilitary police officers' orders to halt and climbed onto a rooftop where police shot him in the lower body to stop him. “Nonetheless, the wanted man continued fleeing, and when he tried to move to another roof, he tripped and fell, and was fatally injured as a result,” she said.
However, Shahdi Awad, who lives in a neighboring building and who said he saw the incident, told Reuters Abu Latifa was shot dead and had not fallen off the roof. “He was shot repeatedly on the rooftop, and that's where he stayed until the soldiers came and took down the body,” he said. Palestinians who saw Abu Latifa said he had gunshot wounds in his legs but no clear sign of damage elsewhere. Palestinian doctors said his family's had refused permission for an autopsy.
The police spokeswoman, Luba Samri, said, “He (Awad) can say whatever he wants. Our account is what happened.”
She said that Abu Latifa, and a second man arrested without incident in Qalandiya, were “suspected of planning a terrorist attack within Israel.” Qalandiya residents said Abu Latifa was a member of the Fatah political party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas but that they had no knowledge of him having any affiliation with armed factions within the party.

Jakarta (IINA) – An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's province of Papua, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake occurred on Monday evening at 6:41 (21:41 GMT) about 250 km west of the provincial capital Jayapura.
"The quake was felt very strongly for four seconds," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for National Disaster Mitigation Agency, told AFP. He pointed out that the residents panicked and rushed out of their homes.
Nugroho added there were no initial reports of damage, explaining that data was still being collected.
Given the fact that the quake struck inland, no tsunami warning was issued by the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
