New York (IINA) - Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad must leave office or face being removed by force, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said, rejecting Russia’s bid to build support for its ally.
Speaking in New York after meeting Saudi Arabia’s allies, Jubeir on Tuesday dismissed Russia’s call for a coalition to defend Assad against ISIS as a “non-starter.” He warned that other countries would step up support for rebels from Syria’s moderate opposition, leaving Assad with no choice but to step down or face what he called the “military option.” And he scorned Iran’s involvement in Russia’s putative alliance, describing Tehran as an “occupying power” in Syria and accusing of fomenting ‘terrorism and extremism across the region.
“There is no future for Assad in Syria, with all due respect to the Russians or anyone else,” Jubeir told reporters in New York after meetings with Saudi Arabia’s allies. He spoke of only two possible outcomes for a settlement in Syria, saying a transitional council reached through a political process would be the “preferred option.” A second, military option “could be a more lengthy process and a more destructive process, but the choice is entirely that of Bashar al-Assad,” the Saudi foreign minister said.
Jubeir would not be drawn on specifics of what the military option would look like, but noted that Saudi Arabia is already supporting “moderate rebels” in their battle against Assad. “Whatever we may or may not do we’re not talking about,” he said, but quickly added: “There is a Free Syrian Army that is fighting against Bashar al-Assad. “There is a moderate Syrian opposition that is fighting against Bashar al-Assad and this opposition is getting support from a number of countries,” he noted. “And we expect that this support will continue and intensify.” Jubeir said the best solution would be for Assad to accept the principles of the Geneva I agreement signed at a peace conference in 2012, laying the groundwork for a transitional government.
Under this plan, he said, Assad would immediately cede power to an executive council with full powers made up of both members of his regime and opposition figures. “And, sometime between the formation of this council and elections - whether it’s a day or a week or a month, I don’t know - President Assad would sail into the sunset,” he said. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s President Hassan Rowhani came to the UN General Assembly in New York this week to urge the world to support Assad and defeat the ISIS. Putin proposed a Security Council resolution to govern foreign military action in Syria, but Saudi Arabia, a key member of the existing US-led coalition against the ISIS rejects this. “I think if the Russians were serious about fighting Daesh, they could join the existing international coalition,” Jubeir said.

Paris (IINA) - French authorities have launched a criminal probe of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime for alleged war crimes committed between 2011 and 2013, AFP reported quoting well informed sources.
Paris prosecutors opened a preliminary war crimes inquiry on September 15, a source close to the case said. A diplomatic source confirmed the launch of the probe. The investigation is focusing on evidence provided by a former Syrian army photographer known by the codename “Caesar,” who defected and fled the country in 2013, bringing with him some 55,000 graphic photographs of scenes from the brutal conflict. The announcement comes as the four-year war in Syria takes center-stage at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where U.S. President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have clashed over how to bring an end to the crisis.
French President Francois Hollande has joined Obama in insisting Assad cannot play a role in the country’s future, against opposition from Damascus’s allies Russia and Iran. “Russia and Iran say they want to be part of a solution,” Hollande said. “So we must work with these countries to explain to them that the route to a solution does not go through Bashar al-Assad.”

Washington, (IINA) - Researchers have developed a new test that can detect nearly any known virus that infects humans and animals, which offers the potential of diagnosing infections when doctors don’t know what to look for, UPI reported.
Researches named this method the “ViroCap” and they said that it would take years for it to be used regularly on patients, mainly because its accuracy still needs to be verified in extensive clinical trials.
Dr. Gregory Stroch, a professor of pediatrics at Washington University in St. Louis said: "With this test, you don't have to know what you're looking for".
He elaborated: “It casts a broad net and can efficiently detect viruses that are present at very low levels. We think the test will be especially useful in situations where a diagnosis remains elusive after standard testing or in situations in which the cause of a disease outbreak is unknown".
Researchers said that they plan to continue to refine the test and validate its accuracy well beyond the small trials that have been conducted, saying that the test will be publicly released so that other researchers and doctors can work with, use and improve it.

Mob kills Muslim villager over cow slaughter rumor in India

Wednesday 30 Sep 2015 - 14:45 Makkah mean time-17-12-1436

New Delhi (IINA) - A 58-year-old Muslim villager called Iqlakh was killed by a mob in Greater Noida's Bisada village, not far from New Delhi, India’s capital, on Monday night following rumors of cow slaughter in his house, according to media reports.  Danish, the victim’s 21-year-old son, was critically injured in the attack and is on ventilator support in Kailash Hospital, Noida, the police confirmed.
As tension gripped the village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh and spread to nearby areas, another mob went on the rampage on Tuesday morning in Ooncha Amirpur - barely 5km from Bisada - demanding death penalty for those involved in cow slaughter. The mob clashed with the police after six people were arrested for the murder. Kiran S, SSP, Gautam Budh Nagar said, "Around 800 armed forces, including a battalion of Provincial Armed Constabulary and police from Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr and Hapur, have been deployed in the village and the areas around it."
Superintendent of police (rural) Sanjay Singh said Iqlakh's body has been handed over to his family after an autopsy, the report of which suggested that he died due to severe blood loss and haemmorage. He also said an FIR had been filed against 10 people, six of whom were nabbed and put behind bars. They have been identified as Rupender, Vivek, Sree Om, Sandeep, Saurabh and Gaurav, all in their late 20s. "All accused are from Bisada," Singh said. "They have confessed. We recovered some meat from their possession. The accused claimed it was beef that they recovered from the deceased's home. It has come to our knowledge that the mob held a meeting in a temple in the middle of the village, where they decided to teach the deceased a lesson for slaughtering cows. The mob then rushed to the victim's home and attacked the family," he added.
Family members of Iqlakh, the murdered Bisada villager, denied slaughtering any cow in their small house and claimed the story was cooked up to target them. They also claimed neither the cops reached on time nor their neighbors came to their rescue. Iqlakh lived there with his 70-year-old mother Asgari, 52-year-old wife Ikraman, younger son Danish (21) and daughter Sahista (16). His elder son Sartaz works with the Indian Air Force and is currently posted in Chennai. Danish suffered serious injuries in the attack. "Hundreds of people gathered in front of our house on Monday night and started abusing us," Times of India newspaper reported quoting Asgari. "A heated argument followed for 10 minutes after which the agitators turned violent and broke open the main gate. They misbehaved with my daughter-in-law and grand-daughter. They did not even spare me. I had locked myself in the washroom but they broke open the washroom door and thrashed me." Asgari added, "The attack continued for nearly half an hour, but no one came to our rescue. They brutally thrashed my son and grandson. They, then dragged my son's body to the road and fled after dumping it there."
The family members alleged that a call from the loudspeaker mounted on a village temple incited the mob to attack their house. “After dinner, my father went to sleep in his room on the first floor. We heard the announcement from the village temple in our vicinity calling the villagers to assemble at our house as he had slaughtered a calf. At 10:30pm, more than 100 people armed with sticks and bricks surrounded my house. They abused and broke the main gate to enter our house. They mercilessly thrashed my brother who was studying on the ground floor and damaged the furniture. Thereafter, they went upstairs and attacked my father,” Mehraaj, daughter of the victim told Hindustan Times.
The mob also misbehaved with the women in the house, Mehraaj added. Mehraaj said the mob dragged her father to the main road of the village. “They tore my father’s clothes. We pleaded with them to leave him but they did not listen. They kept hitting on my father’s head and chest with stones and sticks till he died. The mob dispersed after they heard the siren of the police vehicles,” she said. She did not know who informed the police but the area police officials said that they got a phone call about the attack.
Senior citizens of the village say Ikhlaq’s family has been living in the village for the past 70 years and they had a good reputation among the villagers. He was a blacksmith and used to help everyone in the village that has never witnessed any communal tension in the past. “He was very happy when his elder son Sartaj got recruited in Indian Air Force around two years ago. His younger son Danish was studying in a college and was preparing for competitive exams for a government job. The incident is very unfortunate for the entire village,” said Dharam Pal, a villager.
The Bisada village falls under Dadri tehsil in Greater Noida. It has a population of 9,000 people, most of whom belong to the Thakur community. The village has only two houses belonging to Muslims. Ikhlaq’s neighbours have been missing since the incident and have abandoned the village. The victim’s cousin Toufiq Khan, who managed to flee from the spot after the mob attack told police that the mob tried to beat him as well.

Rabat, (IINA) - The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) condemned on Tuesday the racist statements against French Muslims made by the ex-French minister and a member of the European Parliament Nadine Morano.
In a talk show aired on the 2nd French channel, Morano stated that she find the increasing Muslim numbers in the French society “alarming”, urging for the "preservation of a Christian France".
The Director General of ISESCO Abdulaziz Al-Tuwaijri said that such racist statement should not be issued by a member of the European Parliament, and that a member of the parliament should oblige the international rules regarding respect for human rights, cultural and religious diversity among other aspects.
Al-Tuwaijri urged the Council of Europe and the European Parliament to condemn these remarks, saying that they are against the Universal Declaration of human rights and the European Convention on Human Rights.

Washington (IINA) – The United States will open “lines of communication” with Russia to avoid “misjudgment and miscalculation” as a US-led coalition conducts strikes against ISIS in Syria while Moscow is assisting government forces in their fight against the terror group, Russia Today (RT) reported.
“This morning, (Defense) Secretary (Ashton) Carter directed his staff to open lines of communication with Russia on de-confliction,” Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook told reporters at a press briefing.
“The purpose of these de-confliction discussions will be to ensure that ongoing coalition air operations are not interrupted by any future Russian military activity, to ensure the safety of coalition air crew and to avoid misjudgment and miscalculation,” Cook said.
Defense Department officials have been ordered to work out the details of conversations with Russia “in the coming days.”
“We expect the details of those conversations, including the exact timing of those conversations, will be worked out in the coming day," Cook told reporters.
The importance of clear communication between Moscow and Washington has increased recently as Russia is readying to launch its own air strikes against ISIS, independently of the US-led coalition.
Despite there being major disagreements between Russia and the US on possible solutions to the conflict in Syria, both sides have agreed that collaboration on the issue is possible and should be explored.
Speaking at the General Assembly, President Putin stressed that the participation of the Russian military in a ground operation in Syria was out of question.
In his address to the General Assembly, President Obama said that the U.S. is willing to work with Russia and Iran to solve Syrian crisis as the U.S. “by itself, cannot impose stability on a foreign land, unless we work with other nations”.

New York (IINA) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stressed on Tuesday that addressing the growing threat posed by violent extremist groups, such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known Daesh, goes to the heart of the mission of the United Nations and requires a unified response, UN News Center reported.
“Violent extremist groups – including Daesh and Boko Haram – pose a direct threat to international security, mercilessly target women and girls, and undermine universal values of peace, justice and human dignity,” said Ban.
“That threat is growing,” he added, noting that recent data shows a 70 percent increase in foreign terrorist fighters from over 100 countries to regions in conflict.
The Leaders’ Summit on Countering Violent Extremism, hosted by US President Barack Obama on the margins of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, brought together representatives from more than 100 nations, more than 20 multilateral institutions, some 120 civil society groups from around the world, and partners from the private sector.
“Our objective must be to go beyond countering violent extremism to preventing it in the first place,” the UN chief said.
In this regard, he outlined five key priorities: the need to engage all of society; the need to make a special effort to reach young people; to build truly accountable institutions; respect for international law and human rights; and the importance of not being ruled by fear – or provoked by those who strive to exploit it.
Opening the meeting, President Obama said that it is not going to be enough to defeat ISIL in the battlefield. “We have to prevent it from radicalizing, recruiting and inspiring others to violence in the first place. And this means defeating their ideology. Ideologies are not defeated with guns, they’re defeated by better ideas – a more attractive and compelling vision”.
Obama noted that the United States is stepping up its efforts to discredit ISIL’s propaganda, especially online, and working to lift up the voices of Muslim scholars, clerics and others – including ISIL defectors – “who courageously stand up to ISIL and its warped interpretations of Islam”.

Rabat (IINA) – Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri called for not politically exploiting the painful stampede incident that occurred in Mina on the first day of Eid al-Adha, into which the competent Saudi authorities are conducting extensive investigations.
Dr Altwaijri said in a statement obtained by the International Islamic News Agency (IINA) that this incident should not be exploited to spread slanders and abuses against  the country which Allah has honored by making it the land of the Two Holy Mosques and Holy sites. He pointed to the great efforts exerted and are being exerted by Saudi Arabia to develop the Two Holy Mosques and care for them, as well as providing pilgrims from all over the globe with means of security and comfort.
Altwaijri said that this tragic incident has grieved all Muslims, at the forefront of whom are the leaders of the Kingdom and its people who expressed their shock and pain at what happened. He stated that the relevant Saudi authorities had immediately responded to this painful incident and provided the ambulance, rescue and treatment services.

He added that the principles of the joint Islamic action call for respect for the sovereignty of member states and non-interference in their affairs and work to promote the brotherhood and solidarity ties among them.
Altwaijri said that today the Muslim world is in desperate need for synergy and cooperation in righteousness and piety and honesty in words and deeds in order to be able to overcome the difficulties and problems that have overwhelmed and weakened its strength and unity.

Abbas: Raising of Palestine's flag at UN is our moment of hope

New York, (IINA) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wrote an article for Huffington Post yesterday anticipating the raising of Palestine’s flag at the UN headquarters in New York.
Abbas wrote about the event of raising Palestine’s flag, saying that the decision to raise the flag enhanced the sense of pride Palestinians have. It also noted that the vote to raise the flag confirmed that Palestinians are not the only people fighting for their quest for freedom.
The following is the full text of the article.
Tomorrow (Today), the Palestinian flag will be raised for the first time at the United Nations headquarters in New York and at other U.N. offices around the world. The sense of pride among the Palestinian people was overwhelming the day the world voted in favor of this landmark initiative. I am certain that the day our flag rises among the flags of the community of nations will also be a most emotional and proud day.
The General Assembly's vote confirmed again that we, the people of Palestine, are not alone in our quest for freedom, fulfillment of our rights and an end to decades of Israeli occupation and oppression. On September 30, we will raise our flag in a peaceful gesture that will remind all that justice and independence is ultimately possible. To get to this destination, we need the support of our friends around the world and the leadership of the U.N.
As the U.N. this year marks its 70th anniversary, its longest-standing, unresolved issue is the question of Palestine. For more than 68 years, my people have been denied their rights and denied freedom. In 1948, we were cast out of our places of birth and those of our ancestors; our homes and heritage were destroyed; we were expelled or fled into exile to what were to be temporary camps until the conflict and question of Palestinian statehood were resolved.
Today, Palestinians remain in exile, with over five million refugees denied their right to return. An illegal, oppressive Israeli occupation denies basic human rights, including the right of people to self-determination and freedom -- a foundational principle of the U.N. But the Palestinian people have not given up hope and have not given up their rightful and just quest to live in independence and peace in our homeland.
Hope is the power that helps my people endure and overcome the horrors we have too often faced. Many have compared living in Palestine to apartheid. But our situation is even more dire because Israel, the occupying power, is not only executing a system of segregation and subjugation; it persists with the blatant ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people from their land. While the Israeli government pays lip service to the two-state solution internationally, domestically it employs policies aimed at destroying what's left of Palestine. Israel demolishes our homes, swallows up our land and works at breaking the spirit and will of our people.
In Bethlehem, Israeli checkpoints and an illegal annexation wall cages in people, depriving them of their rights, livelihoods and access to their land. Palestinians in the Gaza Strip continue to suffer the wounds of last year's barbaric war as Israel's cruel blockade imprisons the entire population and renders the Strip uninhabitable. In Occupied East Jerusalem, Israeli forces and leaders aid extremist attacks and religious zealots' attempts to assert control over Al Aqsa Mosque and ignite a religious conflict. Palestine refugees across the region are suffering repeated displacement, dispossession and trauma, denied the ability to return home.
Countless events every single day illustrate the ways in which Israel's illegal occupation devastates Palestine. But few recent events resonated with the world, like the arson attack on the Dawabsheh family home. A group of Israeli terrorist settlers smashed the windows of the Dawabsheh home and threw Molotov cocktails inside, immediately burning to death an 18-month-old baby, Ali. Both of Ali's parents have since perished due to third degree burns. More than a month later, their now-orphaned 4-year-old son remains in the hospital. The Israeli government has attempted to disassociate itself from the attack, but the truth is that its pervasive and systematic colonization of Palestine with settlements, messages of intolerance, flouting of international law and culture of impunity not only facilitated that attack but continue to encourage others like it.
Israel's pursuit of reckless policies obstructs any international progress for the two-state solution. I recall the high hopes I felt in 1993 when the Oslo Accords were signed and a five-year deadline set to achieve an end to the occupation and peace and security between the two states, the State of Palestine and Israel. That was 22 years ago. Since then, Israel has failed to negotiate in good faith while entrenching its illegal occupation. Israel is not dedicated to the international community's values of freedom, justice and peace -- let alone the two-state solution and the longstanding parameters underpinning it. It has trampled the Oslo Accords and with it the peace process.
As world leaders gather in New York to commemorate the U.N.'s 70th anniversary, these same leaders must also reflect on the U.N.'s failures. Palestine has languished on the U.N. agenda since the organization's inception. This persistent neglect has cost too many lives, dampened hope, undermined international law and stained the reputation of the U.N. World leaders must find the political will to uphold the rule of law, respect human rights and make good on the commitments they collectively made to the Palestinian people over decades. The U.N. must give my people more than hope.
A peaceful, fair and just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict exists. But the peace process must be multilateral. The same pattern of negotiations imposed for years will not work because Israel is the occupying power. Israel controls our territory, natural resources, economic affairs and our daily lives, violating every fundamental human right of the Palestinian people. We cannot directly negotiate with a power that has this level of control and exhibits such contempt for the rights and existence of our people.
That is why a collective, multilateral peace process is necessary. Such processes have made significant progress in difficult negotiations for the Balkans, Libya and Iran. They should be attempted to decisively end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict after all these years of futile attempts to achieve peace.
On the vote to raise our flag at the U.N., the international community demonstrated its solidarity with the Palestinian people. Now it must act with urgency to seize the momentum from this symbolic gesture and provide a clear plan to end the illegal Israeli occupation, uphold human rights and achieve justice. It is time to finally achieve the independence of the State of Palestine, peacefully resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict -- the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict -- as was promised long ago.

With refugees, Germany’s Muslim population could be Europe’s largest

Tuesday 29 Sep 2015 - 21:47 Makkah mean time-16-12-1436

Berlin (IINA) - When the flood of Middle Eastern refugees arriving in Europe finally ebbs and asylum-seekers settle down in their new homes, Germany could unexpectedly find itself housing the continent’s largest Muslim minority, Reuters reported.
The arrival of so many Syrians fleeing their country’s brutal civil war is bound to change the face of Islam in Germany, which until now has been dominated by the Turks who first came as so-called “guest workers” in the 1960s. While refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq and other Muslim countries are also arriving, the Syrians make up the largest single contingent — estimated at about 45 percent — and have the best chances of being granted political asylum here.
The longer-term impact on Germany, which unlike Britain or France has no tradition of taking in immigrants from former colonies, is unclear. Many are still struggling through problems all refugees face such as learning the language and getting a job. The number of those yet to follow them is also unknown. Some trends are emerging, though, and Germans familiar with the Muslim minority see reasons for both hope and concern. The first change is simply in the numbers.
“We could suddenly have five million Muslims,” said Thomas Volk, an Islam expert at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a think tank associated with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. France now has Europe’s largest Muslim minority with five million, followed by Germany with about four million. But the French figure is an estimate several experts say is too high. Germany expects 800,000 refugees this year, most of them Muslims, and “this trend will continue,” Volk told Reuters. “It will not stop abruptly on Jan. 1, 2016.” In addition, most are young adult men, so the numbers will rise further when those who settle here start families.
Merkel’s critics have raised security concerns about letting in so many unchecked refugees, but German security officials say they have not found any proof that jihadists are among them. A broader question is what kind of Muslims will be joining a minority dominated by the local Turkish community, which makes up two-thirds of the German Muslim population. Many Turkish immigrants were poor workers from rural areas who struggled to integrate into German society. Turkey has reinforced the diaspora’s link to their homeland by building mosques and sending imams, many of whom speak no German.
Lamya Kaddor, a German-born academic of Syrian descent, said Islam in mostly Sunni Muslim Syria was “conservative and open.” “This is because of the religious composition of the country,” she said in an interview. “There are many different Christians, Druze, Alawites and some Shiites. Religion was never in the foreground. They’re very tolerant.” Being accustomed to life in a multi-faith society, Syrians could integrate more easily into German society, Kaddor said. Syria also has no religious institution like Turkey’s well-funded Diyanet that oversees many Turkish mosques in Germany.
While individual Syrians may integrate more easily, their collective presence could further splinter a Muslim minority that already is unable to speak in public as a group. Arabs are a tiny minority among German Muslims now but their total could rise to about one-fifth of the overall community, a change that could exacerbate rivalries among Muslim leaders. “Arabic-influenced Islam will become more visible and German Islam more diverse,” said Aiman Mazyek, the son of a Syrian father and German mother who is chairman of the small Central Council of Muslims representing mostly non-Turkish Muslims.
A lively speaker in fluent German, Mazyek has already irritated some Turkish German leaders by outshining them in public and appearing as an unofficial spokesman for Muslims here. Rivalries like this have stymied efforts to get Germany’s four main Muslim associations to work together. “Let’s face it — Arabs have a superiority complex,” said a German analyst who asked not to be named. “They think they know Islam better because they can read the Qur'an in their language.”
Birol Ucan, spokesman for the large Omar Ibn Al-Khattab mosque in the Berlin’s multicultural Kreuzberg district, said some Syrians had turned up at his and other mostly Arabic-speaking mosques in recent months, but not that many yet. “They’re still busy with refugee problems like finding shelter and getting their papers in order,” he said. In general, the Syrians are better educated than other migrants coming here and have better prospects of integrating. “Syrians have a reputation for being hard workers,” Ucan said. “They’re not classic guest workers,” Kaddor observed. “They’re middle class, even upper class — they’re always the first who can flee.” The most urgent task now, she said, is to provide them with German lessons and jobs so they can start a new life rather than languish in refugee shelters.
Ahmad Al-Kurdi, a 26-year-old sports instructor from Hama, lives up to the image Syrians have here. In the 10 months since he arrived, he has learned German well and will soon begin studying at a Berlin university for a master’s degree. “Life here is super,” he said in the flat he shares with another refugee. “But I want to go back — Syria is my country,” he added, without knowing when that might be possible.
How Germany will accept the changing face of Islam on its soil is also unclear. Volk said the current public welcome for the refugees could morph into a more divisive debate about Merkel’s policies next year when four federal states hold elections. Last winter, before it took the moral high ground in the refugee crisis, Germany saw a wave of anti-Muslim rallies led by a right-wing movement called PEGIDA, an acronym for Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West. Merkel condemned that movement as racists “with hatred in their hearts.”
Recalling that anti-immigrant parties won seats in several state legislatures in the 1990s after an earlier refugee wave, Volk said Merkel’s CDU had to start a broad public debate to counter prejudices against the Muslims. “We must be careful. The populists could make (the refugees) into their issue,” he said.

Al-Aqsa tensions trigger clashes across West Bank

Ramallah (IINA) - Clashes have erupted across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as a result of ongoing confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli forces at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Along with other Knesset members from the Arab Joint List coalition, Jamal Zahalka was present at the Al-Aqsa compound on Tuesday to protest recent visits to the holy place by Jewish organizations and entry restrictions on Palestinian worshippers, Al Jazeera reported.  "We have no problem with Jewish visitors. We have a problem with groups that come to provoke Palestinians," Zahalka said, referring to right-wing organizations and settler groups. Since Monday morning, Palestinian men under the age of 50 have been barred from visiting the mosque, while women have not faced any age restrictions. An Israeli police spokesman was not available for comment.
The mosque is the third holiest site for Muslims. "It is in occupied territory and Palestinians have a right to defend their places of worship," Zahalka said. "We refuse to normalize the visits (by Jewish Israelis) to the mosque because the next step is dividing it," he said, alluding to the division of Hebron's al-Ibrahimi Mosque into a Muslim section and a Jewish section. Palestinian Knesset members called for unity between the West Bank-based Fatah party and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. "We want to see unity on the ground in order to support al-Aqsa," Zahalka said. During the week-long Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which began Sunday evening, many Jews from across the country visit the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
In cities and villages across the West Bank, Palestinian shop owners and public institutions held a general strike for two hours in solidarity with al-Aqsa Mosque compound. On Tuesday evening, Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces in Ramallah, Bethlehem, Hebron and elsewhere. Dozens of injuries were reported, including at least seven wounded in demonstrations near Ramallah. Speaking to Al Jazeera, an Israeli army spokeswoman said that "hundreds of Palestinians gathered near Ramallah" outside Beit El, a Jewish-only settlement. "A riot took place and Israeli forces responded using riot dispersal means." The spokeswoman confirmed that Israeli soldiers used "rubber-coated bullets and 0.22 inch caliber ammunition", striking seven protesters in "the lower extremities". She denied the use of live ammunition.

Sana’a (IINA) - Pro-government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition on Monday captured “balaq” mountain and “Marbat Al-Dam" two of the Houthi rebel’s remaining strongholds in Yemen’s Marib Province, opening the path to a key highway leading to Sana’a, Al Arabiya News reported.
Backed by land and air support from the coalition, the Yemeni army managed to move its positions near Marib dam in an offensive to retake it”. Marib Dam, a reservoir south-west of Marib city is strategically important for the coalition, and the roads around it were usually   used by the Houthis to bring in reinforcements to hold the remaining parts of Marib Province under their control. Many members from Houthi and Saleh’s militias were killed and injured, according to Yemeni and coalition’s sources.
President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi on Sunday urged Houthi militias to lay down their arms and resume dialogue to end Yemen’s conflict, as he left for the U.N. General Assembly. The embattled leader, who returned Wednesday to the southern city of Aden after a nearly six-month exile, headed to New York where he is to address the General Assembly.

Rome, (IINA) - The International Organization for Migration has issued a report on Tuesday saying that some 522,000 migrants have made the dangerous crossing across the Mediterranean so far this year, SPA reported.
The report says that more than 388,000 of the migrants crossed by boat from Turkey to Greece, while 131,000 ventured from Northern Africa to Italy.
“Even if arrivals are still increasing, it is necessary to emphasize that this is not an emergency in terms of numbers”, said IOM director general William Swing, pointing to the 4 million Syrian refugees being hosted by Middle Eastern countries and Turkey.
He added: “Europe should create legal channels for migrants so that they do not have to turn to people smugglers and their boats”.
Nearly 2,900 people have died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, according to IOM.

The volunteers were divided into two groups: the first one had 2,000 members and all of them were expatriates living in the Kingdom. The 500-member second group offered various services to pilgrims in different languages.
The coordinator of the group Abdul Aleem Kano said that both groups consisted of Keralites coming from all over Saudi Arabian regions.
Qassim Mohammad, one of the members, taught methods of offering services to pilgrims and ways of guiding lost pilgrims, Qassim said: “We all believe that volunteering to provide services during Haj is a supreme form of humanitarianism. Some of the members are academics who can speak different Indian languages in addition to English, French, and Arabic”.
According to Qassim, the group was formed five years ago on an initiative made by some Indian workers in Makkah. It started with seven people and the number kept growing year after year. All members of the group work 24 hours in shifts and some members refused to rest because they wanted to seize the moment and help as many pilgrims as possible.

London (IINA) – Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a large fire engulfed part of a south London mosque which is said to be the largest in Western Europe, according to The Guardian.
Two boys aged 14 and 16 have been arrested on suspicion of arson, and both remain in custody at a south London police station, Scotland Yard said on Sunday.
Seventy firefighters battled the blaze at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden on Saturday afternoon, which London fire brigade said had hit administrative buildings and not the main prayer room.
Police are not currently treating the attack as motivated by Islamophobia, a Scotland Yard spokesman said. But he refused to rule out racism as a possible factor in the teenagers' alleged actions.
Pictures on social media showed a column of black smoke billowing up from the mosque. Half of the building’s ground floor was on fire, along with a quarter of its first floor and roof.
The enormous building sits on a 5.2 acre site and can hold 10,500 people.

Obama’s rare acknowledgement of mistakes in Libya's transition came as the United Nations tries to negotiate an end to fighting between two rival governments and their armed backers which has pushed the country to the brink of collapse.
"Even as we helped the Libyan people bring an end to the reign of a tyrant, our coalition could have and should have done more to fill a vacuum left behind," Obama was quoted by Reuters as saying.
"We will help any legitimate Libyan government as it works to bring the country together, but we also have to recognize that we must work more effectively in the future as an international community to build capacity for states that are in distress before they collapse,” he added.

The UN chief had been in contact with the two presidents separately ahead of Sunday night's meeting at UN headquarters, Ban's office said.
Speaking to journalists afterward, Maduro described the talks as "tense and difficult”.

Terror cell busted in Saudi Arabia; two killed, three arrested

Tuesday 29 Sep 2015 - 11:31 Makkah mean time-16-12-1436

Riyadh (IINA) – Two terrorists were killed and three others arrested during four simultaneous security operations in Riyadh and Dammam on Sunday, Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, security spokesman at the Ministry of Interior, announced on Monday.
The ministry confirmed that the cell was linked to Yousaf Al-Suleiman, the suicide bomber who blew himself up at the mosque in the compound of the Special Emergency Forces Center in Abha that killed 15 people, including 12 soldiers, on Aug. 6. Al-Turki said that the cell had been planning to carry out terrorist attack in the Kingdom and preparations were in an advanced stage. The security forces carried out raids on three hideouts in Riyadh and one in Dammam. Abdul Aziz Bin Zaid Al-Shamri, a wanted terrorist, was killed in a security operation at a house in Badr district in Dammam. He was killed in an exchange of fire with the security forces. Two terror suspects — Muhannid Bin Muhammad Al-Otaibi and Fahd Bin Falah Al-Harbi — were arrested from the hideout.
Aqeel Bin Omaish Al-Mutairi, who was on the list of 85 wanted terrorists published by the ministry earlier, was killed in a raid on a residential apartment in Al-Falah district in Riyadh. He fired at the security forces and in the ensuing exchange of gunfire Al-Mutairi was killed. Several years ago, Al-Mutairi was brought back to the Kingdom from Iraq and was under detention for three years. He was released after undergoing ministry’s counseling and rehabilitation program. He then traveled to Yemen and later infiltrated into the Kingdom to carry out the planned attack. During the third operation at a residential villa in Al-Andalus district, wanted terrorist Faisal Bin Hamid Al-Ghamdi surrendered. The security forces also raided a residential annex in Al-Sulai district, which was a hideout for cell members. It was found that the annex was a fortified facility inside a residential building.
Al-Turki said the arrested terrorist Al-Harbi rented the house in Riyadh’s Monasiyah district from where the security officials arrested two terror suspects on Sept. 17. The suspects — Ahmed Saeed Jabir Al-Zahrani, 21, and Mohammed Saeed Jabir Al-Zahrani, 19 — were arrested following a gun battle during which the suspects threw a grenade at the officers. In a similar operation carried out at that time, the security officials raided a rest house in Darma region, about 60 km west of Riyadh. It was found that the rest house was turned into a hideout to make explosives. From the hideout, the officers seized huge cache of weapons and money, including three machine guns, 36 bullet magazine holders, 2,848 rounds of machine gun ammunition, three handguns, 10 handgun magazines, five grenades, currencies amounting to SR402,101 and $5,500, in addition to mobile phones and laptops. The arrest of the two suspects led to further investigation that resulted in Sunday’s raid, Al-Turki said.

NASA : Water found on Mars

Washington (IINA) - NASA announced on Monday that liquid saltwater exists on the surface of Mars - a discovery that scientists say indicates the "potential" for life on the planet, according to media reports.
The historic findings by scientists from NASA and several US universities are based on research on dark, arrow and elongated streaks that appear on the surface of the Red Planet and which are known as "recurring slope lineae" (RSL). Research shows the streaks "appear and grow incrementally in the downslope direction during warm seasons". NASA scientists suggest the streaks were formed as a result of salty "flows" or "seeps" because they bear a striking resemblance to the shapes and curves that water on Earth makes as it flows along the surface of the ground. The theory that water exists on Mars was first proposed by scientist Lujendra Ojha, who as an undergraduate student at the University of Arizona in 2011, studied dark, finger-shaped images on Mars.
The authors of the research paper - "Spectral Evidence for Hydrated Salts in Recurring Slope Linea on Mars" - published in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience identified four key hydrated salts that indicated the presence of water: magnesium perchlorate, magnesium, chlorate, and sodium perchlorate as present in the dark streaks. "Our findings strongly support the hypothesis that recurring slope lineae form as a result of contemporary water activity on Mars," the paper, which will be the topic of NASA's announcement, said. Alfred McEwen - planetary Geology professor at the University of Arizona, who co-authored the paper - had previously done extensive research on ravines to see if water existed on the dry and frigid planet.
Science fiction enthusiasts and Hollywood executives may be disappointed to learn there will be no Alien creatures, or even large organisms, as far as science is concerned. Life on Mars, if it exists, will most likely be microbes, McEwen said. The dark streaks were originally seen by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter travelling at low and middle latitudes in the southern hemisphere, but as temperatures spiked during summer months, the streaks appeared to be seeping downslope and faded in cold seasons. They appeared again and in the same spot year after year.
Observing this, scientists reasoned that, since Mars is about 80.5 million km further from the sun than Earth and its surface temperature rarely rises above freezing point, it was the rise in temperature during summer that triggered the shapes to appear again. Scientists say this suggests that trapped ice inside salty particles melted and flowed down the steep slopes of Mars, creating the dark river-shaped streaks on the surface. "These results strongly support the hypothesis that seasonal warm slops are forming liquid water on contemporary Mars," the paper said. "If water on Mars proves to be real, it would not look or feel like water on Earth. Mars water would most likely be ‘briny rather than pure’ not free flowing." "This is a wet soil, not standing water," McEwen said.
