UN House - ESCWA Offices

New York (IINA) – The UN Economic and Social Council on Thursday approved the request received from Mauritania for admission as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA).
To welcome its official admission to the membership of ESCWA, a flag-raising ceremony will be held for Mauritania in front of the ESCWA headquarters, Beirut, in mid-September.
UN-ESCWA is one of the five regional commissions under the administrative direction of the UN Economic and Social Council. It coordinates its activities with those of the major offices of the UN at headquarters and of specialized agencies and intergovernmental organizations, such as the Arab League, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with a view to avoid duplication and ensure complementarity, synergy and exchange of information.
ESCWA has 17 member states (the latest countries to join were Libya, Morocco and Tunisia in 2012).
