Jakarta (IINA) – An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's province of Papua, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake occurred on Monday evening at 6:41 (21:41 GMT) about 250 km west of the provincial capital Jayapura.
"The quake was felt very strongly for four seconds," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for National Disaster Mitigation Agency, told AFP. He pointed out that the residents panicked and rushed out of their homes.
Nugroho added there were no initial reports of damage, explaining that data was still being collected.
Given the fact that the quake struck inland, no tsunami warning was issued by the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
