Jerusalem (IINA) – The United States has confirmed that it continues to view Israeli settlements as illegitimate and strongly opposes steps to advance construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
"We are deeply concerned about the Israeli government’s announcement today of the advancement of nearly 300 new housing units in the West Bank settlement of Beit El, as well as hundreds of new housing units in East Jerusalem,” State Department's Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said in a press statement late Wednesday evening.
"Settlement expansion threatens the two-state solution and calls into question Israel's commitment to a negotiated resolution to the conflict," Toner said, urging the Israeli government “to refrain from unhelpful actions that undercut the possibility of a two-state solution".
The Israeli government's approval on Wednesday to immediately construction 300 homes in Beit El settlement in the West Bank attracted widespread condemnation from the international community.
