Washington (IINA) – The United States on Wednesday rejected Russian allegations that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other Turkish leaders are directly involved in the illegal oil trade with the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a news briefing that U.S. information was that IS was selling oil at the wellheads to middlemen who in turn were involved in smuggling the oil across the frontier into Turkey, Reuters reported.
"We reject outright the premise that the Turkish government is in league with ISIL to smuggle oil across its borders," Toner said. "We frankly see no evidence, none, to support such an accusation," he added.
Russia's defense ministry said Wednesday it had proof that President Erdoğan and his family were benefiting from the illegal smuggling of oil from IS-held territory in Syria and Iraq.
