London, (IINA) - Dozens of local councils across Britain will be welcoming Syrian refugees into the country just in time for Christmas, Express online news reported.
Home Office and Communities minister Richard Harrington said he is certain the "warm welcome" from all parts of the UK will continue, amid fears of Islamophobia. Around 50 local authorities will take on migrants as part of the government's commitment to welcome 20,000 from camps on the borders of Syria by 2020.
Prime Minister David Cameron has said Britain will have 1,000 arrivals from the war-ravaged country by Christmas. Harrington, who is responsible for coordinating the resettlement work across government, told the Commons: "The number of local authorities that have resettled Syrian refugees changes frequently as more Syrians arrive for resettlement in the UK.
Scottish National Party MP Roger Mullin expressed his concerns over the rise of Islamophobia and how local authorities are dealing with this.
But Conservative MP Harrington brushed off concerns, replying: "Of course I do share your concern about Islamophobia.
"All I can say is as far as the refugees that have arrived in this country, I've found nothing but a warm welcome from all parts of the UK - and I'm certain that'll continue."
