Sana’a, (IINA) - The Saudi-led Arab coalition, which has been leading a war against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, announced on Monday that a ceasefire will go into effect in the country ahead of the UN-arranged peace talks in Switzerland, DPA reported.
"The ceasefire will go into effect on Tuesday at 9 GMT", the coalition said in a statement carried by Al Arabiya television.
Yemeni President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi has sent a letter to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman informing him and the coalition command "that the Yemeni government has decided on a seven-day ceasefire initiative to coincide with the start of the consultations" in Switzerland, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
Hadi's letter said the ceasefire would be extended if the other party (Houthi rebels) abides by it.
Saudi Arabia and fellow partners have been carrying out a military campaign in Yemen against the Houthis, who are fighting to oust the internationally recognized Hadi, since March.
