UN, OIC conference on Jerusalem kicks off in Jakarta today

Jakarta (IINA) – The UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP), in cooperation with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), is organizing a two-day international conference on Jerusalem, here on Monday, the Jakarta Post reported.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi is scheduled to give remarks in the opening ceremony of the conference, under the theme “Addressing the Present and Shaping the Future of Jerusalem.”
Participants in the conference include UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia and Representative of the UN Secretary General Douglas Broderick, Deputy Chairman of CEIRPP Desra Percaya, who is also permanent representative of Indonesia to the UN, OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine Affairs Samir Bakr, and Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki. Other representatives of governments, intergovernmental organizations and the United Nations also will be present.
On Tuesday, international, Indonesian and Palestinian speakers will discuss the current situation in Jerusalem, how to enhance international efforts for a halt to unilateral Israeli actions, and possible ways forward for Jerusalem and Jerusalemites. Makarim Wibisono, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, will be among the speakers.
On Wednesday, the CEIRPP will hold a UN Civil Society Forum, entitled "Civil Society Action in Support of Justice in Palestine and Ending the Occupation". Speakers from the UN, Palestine, Indonesia and regional civil society organizations will brief the participants on the key issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, such as borders, refugees, Jerusalem, water, settlements, as well as the current situation on the ground including the humanitarian hardships and the human rights violations endured by the Palestinian people.
