UN chief asks Israel to open Gaza crossing, lift blockade

Gaza (IINA) – Gaza (IINA) – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday asked Israel to open all border crossings with the Gaza Strip and to lift its blockade of the enclave.
He explained that achieving prosperity in Gaza requires activation of trade between the Palestinians in Gaza and Israel, and the rest of Palestine with the outside world, through lifting the blockade imposed on the Strip since 2007, and opening the border crossings in implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1860.
The resolution 1860, which was adopted in January 2009, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and to intensify efforts to bring about arrangements and assurances to achieve a durable ceasefire and calm, including to prevent illicit trafficking in arms and to ensure the sustained reopening of crossings.
