Conakry, (IINA) - Millions of Guineans voted peacefully on Sunday in the country's second free election since its independence around 60 years ago, Reuters reported.
Guinea is Africa's leading producer of bauxite, the raw material for aluminum, and it's currently under the leadership of the Guinean President Alpha Conde, the 77-year-old who is widely expected to win a second mandate.
According to All Africa, election observers reported a high turnout with long queues at polling stations in the capital as well as some parts of the country.
The streets were calm in the country after clashes this week between security forces and supporters of rival parties that left several dead and dozens injured.
President Conde appealed to citizens to maintain harmony. He said: "We are all the same family, please let us vote peacefully together".
The main contender Cellou Diallo also urged the voters "to accept difference of opinion and to respect the choice of each other" and called on Guineans to show maturity and good citizenship in order to avoid post-election violence.
