OIC chief Iyad Madani
Jeddah (IINA) – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Madani has made an urgent appeal to member states and civil society organizations operating in the humanitarian field to deliver humanitarian assistance to the victims and those affected by the Cyclone Chapala in Yemen.
Preliminary data obtained by the OIC General Secretariat suggests that the cyclone has caused the displacement of 40,000 people in Socotra Island, in addition to the destruction of hundreds of homes, flooding the streets, damaging the fishing boats and farms as well as uprooting the trees and disabling the Internet telephone service.
Further, the hurricanes and torrential rains swept the governorates of Shabwa, Hadramout and Mukalla, triggering heavy flooding and causing enormous damage.
The hurricanes come amid the already worsening and critical humanitarian situation experienced by the Yemeni people, as meteorological reports expect that the stricken areas will continue to experience volatile atmospheric conditions, with more hurricanes, heavy rainfall and flooding, which will exacerbate the humanitarian suffering in Yemen.
