Afyon, Turkey (IINA) - Turkey's Director of Religious Affairs Mehmet Görmez noted during a speech that his country will develop an action plan to fight Islamophobia, especially in Europe, which has in recent years seen a rise in anti-Islamist tendencies, Todays’ Zaman news agency reported.

In a speech made in the province of Afyon to mark the 40th anniversary of the Religious Affairs Directorate on Sunday, Görmez said Turkey plans to actively fight Islamophobia in Europe. Stressing that in the past century, the Islamic world has been searching for an identity, Görmez said: “Islam will continue be one of the most important subjects in Turkey and around the world. This [Islamophobia] is something that will make our job more difficult and requires us to be prepared.”

Görmez stressed that in the last few years Turkey's Religious Affairs Directorate had spread a “practice kindness” movement around the world and has shaped its services on that understanding. "Muslim geography is going through one of its toughest times," he said, adding that the Muslim world constantly needs to strengthen its togetherness and brotherhood and take steps accordingly.
