Lyon, (IINA) – A French police officer in Lyon has been suspended from service for two years last Tuesday, due to a series of anti-Islam posts on his personal Facebook account, MWN reported.
According to Lyon’s daily, Le Progrès, the 43-year-old policeman was punished by the national police disciplinary board for several anti-Islam photos and comments he posted on his Facebook page in September 2014.
Following the murder of French tourist Hervé Gourdel, who was abducted and beheaded by extremists, the police officer took to social media to denounce what he calls “Islamic terrorism.”
Nowhere in his social media profile was he identified as member of the police force. This caused him to feel that he was safe to exercise his right to ‘freedom of speech’ and lash out at Muslims.
His posts have been condemned by the administration, which accused him of promoting hatred and discrimination against Muslims.
The police officer had already faced the Lyon Criminal Court in April 18, 2015 over the same issue and was sentenced to a €5,000 fine.
The prosecutor, who had requested that the police officer be given 8 months in jail, appealed the ruling.
