Washington, (IINA) - The US House of Representatives passed a legislation on Thursday under which the Syrian refugees will be subjected to strict checking. The measure must be passed by the Senate before going to President Barack Obama, who has threatened to veto the bill, DPA reported.
Obama is seeking to admit 10,000 Syrian refugees by September 2016. Opposition Republicans, who hold a majority in both chambers of Congress, are calling for a "pause" in Syrian refugee admissions after the Paris attacks. The House vote, 289-137, drew enough support from the Democrats to potentially reach the supermajority needed to override a veto.
Republicans voted 241-3, while more than one-quarter of House Democrats broke ranks to support the measure.
"If our law enforcement and intelligence community cannot verify that each and every person coming here is not a security threat, then they shouldn't be allowed in", House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a press conference. "Right now, the government can't certify these standards. So this plan pauses the program".
