Beirut, (IN) - Lebanon and Paraguay singed on Monday, a protocol of cooperation for the parliaments of both countries, aims to strengthen the administrative and institutional capabilities of the Lebanese and Paraguayan parliaments, The Lebanese Daily Star reported.
The Lebanese state will persevere through dialogue despite regional turmoil, Speaker Nabih Berri said, adding that the country has managed to maintain order through cooperation between cabinet and parliament.
The speaker addressed his comments to Paraguayan counterpart Hugo Velazquez, who visited Berri in the latter’s Ain al-Tineh residence.
The protocol aims at strengthening the administrative and institutional capabilities of the Lebanese and Paraguayan parliaments.
Under the protocol, Paraguayan parliamentarians will visit Lebanon and their Lebanese counterparts would in turn Paraguay.
The visits would allow Lebanese politicians to become more informed about the Paraguayan political system and expertise from which Lebanon can benefit.
They would also examine how Paraguay’s Parliament functions and exchange views with their Paraguayan colleagues on the political, economic and social situation.
The visits would also allow Lebanese parliamentarians to get in touch with the Lebanese community in Paraguay.
“I would like to assure your country, that despite the earthquake hitting the Middle East, we managed to preserve public order in our country thanks to the cooperation between Parliament and the government, which will continue,” Berri said.
He explained that Lebanon has maintained stability thanks to support from international parliamentary institutions and world powers.
“In the current atmosphere, we are confident that we will be able to overcome our problems and preserve the state and its role through dialogue,” Berri added.
“I call on the governments of the two countries and relevant administration to strengthen ties between Lebanon and Paraguay on humanitarian, economic, social and cultural levels,” Berri noted.
For his part, Velazquez promised to work on reaching the highest levels of cooperation between Lebanon and his country, particularly with respect to legislation.
“Through parliamentary diplomacy, we want to help our country advance and develop through the Lebanese window,” Velazquez said.
“We emphasize that Paraguay will defend Lebanese and Arab causes and all humanitarian causes in the world,” he said, inviting Berri to visit his country.
The Paraguayan speaker also visited Prime Minister Tammam Salam.
It is noteworthy that Berri hosted a lunch in honor of Velazquez in the presence of members of parliament’s secretariat and the Lebanese-Paraguayan parliamentarian friendship committee.
