Population of OIC countries rose to 1.68 billion in 2014: IINA Report

Jeddah, (IINA) – The population of the member states (57) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) increased during 2014 by 1.86 percent (30,831,649 people) compared to 2013, during which it reached up to 1,683,185,632 people.
In its Saturday's report about the World Population Day, observed on July 11, the International Islamic News Agency (IINA) said that the population of the Muslim world makes up 23.43 percent of the total world population which exceeded 7.182 billion by the end of 2014.
IINA's report suggested that the population of the OIC countries rose over the past five years (2010-2014) from 1,561,226,103 to 1,683,185,632, by 7.81 percent (121,959,529 people), much higher than the global rate of increase, which reached 4.71 percent (323,081,487 people). Whilst the number of the world's population in the same period rose from 6,859,275,616 to 7,182,357,103.
IINA stated that the new data obtained from the World Bank statistics showed an increase in the fertility rate of the OIC member states, based on the fact that the rate of population growth recorded 37.74 percent of the total average increase in the past five years.
According to the report which is issued by the World Bank until the end of 2014, Indonesia still occupies the first place in terms of population between the member states (57) "of Islamic Cooperation", where the estimated population is around (252.812.245 population), followed by Pakistan (185,512,570 people), then Nigeria (178,516,904 inhabitants), Bangladesh (158,132,926 population), and then Egypt by (83,386,739 people).
In addition, according to the statistics, the Maldives has the lowest population between the member states (351,572 population).
Meanwhile, Brunei has been ranked penultimate by (423.205 population), Suriname (543,925 population), the Comoro Islands (752,438 people) and French Guiana (803,677 people).
The news agency (IINA) points out in its report that the number of people between the ages of 15-64 years-old in OIC countries, representing nearly 62 percent of the population (1,043 billion people), while the percentage of children under the age of fifteen, go beyond the barrier of 34 percent (572 million people), compared to 4 percent (67 million people) for the elderly over the age of sixty-five.
Regarding the percentage of population for the females in member states it is nearly 48.5 percent (816 million people), while males are almost 51.5 percent (867 million people).
It’s worth mentioning the statistics showed that around 46 percent (774 million people) live in rural areas compared to 54.1 percent (909 people ) live in urban areas.
