Brussels (IINA) – EU foreign ministers agreed Monday to look into the establishment of an international support group to breathe new life into the deadlocked Middle East peace process, after US-led diplomatic efforts collapsed last year, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
The ministers tasked EU‘s top diplomat Federica Mogherini with exploring options for the new initiative, with the aim of creating a "renewed multilateral approach to the peace process," according to a joint statement.
The aim is to create "a new international and regional framework that would lead to the conditions to restart negotiations," Mogherini said. The Iran nuclear negotiations showed that such setups can help with "difficult" situations, she noted.
Monday’s decision comes against the backdrop of a French proposal for a new UN Security Council resolution that would set a deadline to end the Middle East conflict.
Mogherini stressed that the new initiative would not change the substance of the EU‘s approach in the region, pointing out that efforts to create a broader negotiating framework are already underway.
