Massive explosion hits Italian consulate in Cairo

Cairo, (IINA) - At least one person has been killed after a massive explosion occurred in front of the Italian consulate in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, according to media reports.
The blast was caused by a car bomb, an official told the state-run news agency Mena.
The consulate, which is situated in downtown Cairo at one of the capital's busiest intersections, was closed at the time of the explosion.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.
Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar told reporters in Cairo that at least one person had been killed in the explosion, which occurred at the Italian Consulate early on Saturday morning (local time). Several other people were reported to have been injured.
Witnesses said the blast caused severe damage to the consulate building.
An official from the consulate told The Associated Press that no staff members were among the wounded.
The consulate, which is situated in downtown Cairo at one of the capital's busiest intersections, was closed at the time of the explosion.
Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on his Twitter account on Saturday that Italy would "not let itself be intimidated" by the attack.
Egypt's public prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, was killed last month by a car bomb attack in the city.
In the same month, another car bomb targeting a police station left three people dead.
