New York (IINA) – The Ambassadorial Group of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) voiced grave concern over the alarming reports about the seriously deteriorating health condition of Palestinian journalist Muhammad Al-Qiq who has been on a hunger strike for 77 consecutive days in protest against his administrative detention by the Israeli occupation authorities.
Similar to several hundreds of Palestinian civilians, Al-Qiq is a victim of the arbitrary punishment of Israeli administrative detention without charge or trial, the Group said in a statement on Wednesday.
Israel, as the occupying power, is responsible for the safety and well-being of Al-Qiq and must be compelled to respect its obligations under international humanitarian law without exception, the statement said.
In a blatant violation of the international law, Israel is holding thousands of Palestinians for prolonged periods under administrative detention without informing them of their charges and repeatedly renewing their detention while preventing the detainees and their legal counsel from examining the so-called “secret evidence”, preventing them from mounting a defense and obstructing their access to due process of the law. Such actions make a mockery of the protection procedures specified in the international law to protect the rights of prisoners and detainees, including situations of foreign occupation, the statement read.
In addition to being held in administrative detention without charge, Palestinian administrative detainees are being subjected to various other kinds of violations that include physical and psychological mistreatment, in grave breach of Israel’s obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention and the provisions of relevant human rights treaties.
In view of the above critical situation, the OIC Ambassadorial Group appeals to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly and all members of the Security Council to urgently call upon Israel, the occupying power, to immediately release Palestinian journalist Muhammad Al-Qiq, whose life is in danger, and to cease all its human rights violations against more than 6,000 Palestinians languishing in its jails, including men, women and children. The international community has clear obligations in accordance with the international law and the relevant UN resolutions and cannot remain silent on this urgent situation, the statement added.
