Jeddah, (IINA) - Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi has set off on Tuesday for Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah to attend an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Press TV reported.
Araqchi will participate in an OIC ministerial meeting in Jeddah, which will be convened to discuss the recent diplomatic row between Tehran and Riyadh following the Iranian attacks on the Saudi embassy in Tehran.
Foreign ministers and representatives from 40 member states of the organization are expected to attend the meeting on Thursday.
OIC Secretary General Iyad Madani received a letter from Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir, in which he had called for the emergency meeting.
Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran on January 3 following attacks from angry demonstrators on the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The demonstrations were against the Saudi execution of Shi’ite cleric Nimr Al-Nimr, who was convicted of terrorism.
Some people mounted the walls of the consulate in Mashhad while incendiary devices were hurled at the embassy in Tehran. Iranian officials strongly denounced both the execution and the raids. Iran also arrested more than 150 people over the incidents.
