Baghdad (IINA) – Iraq’s Ministry of Culture announced that the Iraqi capital city, Baghdad, was designated as a new member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, among a list of 47 cities from 33 countries selected for their contribution in seven creative fields (Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music).
Falah Hassan Shaker, director general of the Department of Cultural Relations and member of Iraqi UNESCO National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, said in a statement that "the cultural and popular circles received with great joy the news of inclusion of Baghdad in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of literature”. He pointed out that, by this designation, "Baghdad will be the first city to be selected from among the Arab states in the field of literature, and the only one from among the Asian and African countries."
Shaker was quoted by Alarabiya.net as saying that “the Ministry of Culture has worked in coordination with a large number of literary institutions over several months, to prepare a special file for the nomination of the capital Baghdad, as a first Arab city to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, especially as the membership of the Cities Network had been limited to foreign countries only.
By joining the Network, cities commit to collaborate and develop partnerships with a view to promoting creativity and cultural industries, to share best practices, to strengthen participation in cultural life, and to integrate culture in economic and social development strategies and plans.
