Kabul (IINA) – The attack on the heavily fortified airport in the east of the second-largest Afghan city of Kandahar, is over after hours of heavy fighting between troops and Taliban militants, official said.
"All attackers were killed and a cleaning operation is underway," said Samim Khapalwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor.
Authorities in Kandahar province were still unclear about the casualty toll in the attack.
An Afghan Army commander inside the airport, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Taliban forces took hostages after they launched an attack on the airport outside the southern city of Kandahar.
"Taliban fighters have taken civilian hostages at the residential quarters for army families within the airport," he said.
The commander said he contacted a friend who lives in the residential compound, who said he "lost a brother and his son was wounded."
Taliban fighters were said to have warned that they would kill the hostages if Afghan security forces approached.
The situation at the airport and nearby residential areas remains tense.
Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the incident, saying they killed and wounded many international and Afghan soldiers during the attack, according to news agencies.
