New York, (IINA) - Egypt and Senegal were formally elected on Thursday to UN Security Council as non-permanent members from Africa for a2016-2017, WAM reported.
Egypt received 179 votes out of 193 from the UN General Assembly member states while Senegal won the second African seat with 187 votes.
Ukraine, Uruguay and Japan secured the three other available seats in the Council, representing the Eastern European, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific regions, respectively.
Although the five countries were running without opposition for the available seats, UN protocol dictates that each candidate must secure at least 127 votes from the UN member states in a General Assembly plenary session.
According to the Cairo Post, Egypt has previously held the non-permanent membership of the UNSC four times since the organization was founded in 1945.
It is noteworthy that the UNGA annually elects five countries for the non-permanent membership for the UNSC for a two-year term. The five non-permanent countries elected in 2014 were Chad, Nigeria, Jordan, Lithuania, and Chile, according to the official website of the UN.
