Brussels, (IINA) - A migrant was shot dead on Thursday in a clash between Bulgarian border guards and a group of migrants thought to be from Afghanistan, DPA reported citing a Bulgarian government source.
A fight and exchange of gunfire broke out after border forces tried to seize around 40 illegal immigrants who had crossed the border between Turkey and Bulgaria.
The source stated that all of the migrants were men and that some of them were armed, noting that all of the migrants are believed to be Afghans based on preliminary information.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov was informed of the incident while in Brussels at an EU summit focused on Europe's migration crisis.
EU President Donald Tusk stated at the end of the summit: "Prime Minister Borissov informed me just before he left and, for me, it's the next argument (for) how important our discussion was tonight". He also noted that "the protection of our external borders is the main priority today, and of course . Borissov is absolutely aware that we are ready to help them".
