London (IINA) – Five NATO staffers were killed, including two military personnel from the British Royal Air Force (RAF), in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Sunday evening, local authorities announced.
The helicopter crashed while landing at the headquarters of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission in Kabul, which provides air support to the Afghan army.
“A coalition helicopter assigned to the Resolute Support Mission crashed due to a non-hostile incident on October 11 at approximately 4:15 p.m. at Camp Resolute Support, Kabul, Afghanistan,” said a statement by the alliance, carried by AFP.
“The incident resulted in the death of five Resolute Support personnel and the injury of five others,” according to the statement.
No details were given regarding the identities of the deceased personnel, saying: “It is Resolute Support policy to defer casualty identification to the relevant national authority”.
The British Defense Ministry has earlier announced that the incident is under investigation, confirming that the crash was "an accident and not the result of insurgent activity".
The latest deaths bring to 456 the total number of British forces, personnel and defense ministry civilians killed serving in Afghanistan since it joined the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.
The crash came just hours after a Taliban suicide car bomber struck a British forces convoy in central Kabul, wounding at least three civilians including a child, Afghan officials said. No British casualties were reported.
