Khartoum (IINA) – The Sudanese government said that the United Nations has asked for its mediation to convince the Libyan warring parties to sign an agreement it drafted to resolve the crisis in the North African nation.
Spokesperson for Sudan’s Foreign Ministry Ali al-Sadiq said the UN asked his country to persuade the Libyan conflicting parties to sign the draft peace deal. He pointed out that Bernardino León, the Special Representative and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), handed over the draft proposal to Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti on Sunday.
León explained that the proposal builds on the UN-brokered rounds of talks, held in Geneva, Algeria and Morocco over the past three months, and comes on back of the Sudanese efforts to reconcile between the Libyan rival factions.
It is noteworthy that Libya’s Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani paid a three-day visit to Sudan in October and accepted a peace plan proposed by President Omer al-Bashir to bring the Libyan groups together for talks on ending the conflict.
