Venelles, southern France (IINA) - A French mayor has been suspended from his party after calling for the country to ban Islam, according to media reports.
Mayor of Venelles in southern France Robert Chardon, who represented the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), claimed in his tweet that Islam will be banned from the country by 18 October, 2027.
He tweeted: “The Muslim religion must be banned in France” and added that anyone practicing the religion must be “immediately escorted to the border”.
After the incident, UMP Vice-president Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet announced the party was suspending Chardon pending a procedure to remove him from the UMP.
The tweet was part of a discussion former French President Nicolas Sarkozy began with the public, using the hashtag #NSDirect, according to the Independent.
Chardon’s offensive tweets were widely condemned by conservatives, including Sarkozy.
Chardon became mayor of the small town of Venelles in 2012 after the death of his predecessor.
