Doha to host UN Asia Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights

Doha (IINA) – Doha will host the First UN Asia Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights on April 19-20, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
During the forum, companies, governments, NGOs, workers and community representatives will discuss key business and human rights issues in Asia.
The Asia Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights is to be convened by the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights with the support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
In a press statement on Sunday, Director of Human Rights Department at the Foreign Ministry Sheikh Khalid Bin Jassim Al-Thani said that the UN Asia Regional Forum is an opportunity to accelerate and expand the awareness, and implement the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in Asia.
He said over two days, participants will discuss the outstanding issues and prioritize the required action at the local level by states and businesses in order to protect human rights in business sector.
Sheikh Khalid Bin Jassim explained that various workshops on a sub-regional level will be held to focus on specific rights or certain sectors in order to consider the issues and propose solutions in a tangible way.
The Forum will center on implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which were endorsed by UN member states in 2011 as the authoritative global standard to prevent and manage the risk of business-related human rights harm.
The two-day event will bring together some 400 participants, representing governments, business and industry associations, civil society organizations, trade unions, law firms, consulting groups, regional and international entities, local associations of human rights, academics and media professionals, Sheikh Khalid Bin Jassim Al-Thani added.
