Azerbaijan seeks to end fighting with Armenia in disputed region

Yerevan, (IINA) - Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense announced on Sunday that the country is seeking to end the ongoing fighting with Armenian forces in the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The announcement came in the wake of the fiercest battle in years that killed at least 30 soldiers at the weekend, DPA reported.
Azerbaijan and Armenia, two former Soviet republics, have fought for decades over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, populated primarily by Armenian Christians but recognized by the UN as part of predominantly Muslim Azerbaijan.
According to Armenia's Defense Ministry, Azerbaijani troops started an offensive with tanks and artillery on Saturday. Armenian forces responded by shooting down a combat helicopter and destroying several tanks and drones in the fighting.
Azerbaijan denied the allegations, saying its soldiers were reacting to heavy attacks from the Armenian side.
Nevertheless, fighting continued along the southern border of Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday, according to a spokesman for the Armenian Defense Ministry.
