Washington (IINA) – The Obama administration confirmed that Daesh senior operative Omar al-Shishani has died as a result of injuries sustained during a U.S. airstrike in Syria on March 4, US media reported quoting officials.
The Pentagon confirmed to several US media what until now was only a possibility, because although it had informed that he was a target in the attack, it was not known for certain whether he had died or not.
He was killed along with 12 additional Daesh fighters in a wave of strikes by drones and manned aircraft near the town of Al Shadadi, in the northeastern province of Al Hasaka bordering Turkey.
Tarkhan Tayumurazovich Batirashvili, known by his nom de guerre Omar al-Shishani, from Georgia has had a reputation as one of Daesh most capable commanders. There has been a $5 million reward on his head from the US State Department. Also known as Abu Omar al-Shishani, once served in an elite Georgian military unit.
It is believed that Shishani began fighting in rebel brigades of the Syrian civil war in 2012 before joining Daesh, where he held prominent military positions including 'minister of war,' according to the Pentagon.
