Kampala (IINA) – People across Uganda on Thursday began voting in presidential, parliamentary and local elections, with incumbent Yoweri Museveni seeking to extend his 30-year rule.
Seven opposition candidates are taking part in the race – widely seen as the tightest in the country's history.
According to media reports, more than 15 million citizens are eligible to vote in this election, under tight security across the country, in anticipation of an outbreak of violence or riots.
Museveni, 71, who has been in power since 1986, seeks to win a new five-year term in office, amid the race with his two main rivals; Uganda’s former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi and opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who had stood against the incumbent in the past three elections and lost each time.
