Los Angeles (IINA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been accorded the honor to address the US-ASEAN Leaders' Summit in Sunnylands, California, during the opening ceremony next Monday, BERNAMA reported.
Malaysian Ambassador to the U.S. Dr Awang Adek Hussin said Wednesday that Kuala Lumpur was given the honor due to its role as the coordinating country for US-ASEAN relations for the 2015-2018 period.
U.S. President Barack Obama is also scheduled to deliver his opening speech apart from Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong of Laos, the current chair of ASEAN.
"Malaysia has an important role to play as a coordinating country for US-ASEAN relations," Awang Adek told Malaysian journalists in Los Angeles. He added that it is the first time the US-ASEAN Summit to be held outside the ASEAN countries, thus signifying the importance of the relationship which they upgraded to a strategic partnership last year.
