Riyadh (IINA) – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura met here on Tuesday with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir to discuss the effects of regional tensions on the Syrian crisis.
In a press statement following the meeting, Al-Jubeir said that the UN envoy's visit to the Kingdom is an opportunity for consultation and exchanging views on pushing the Syrian peaceful process on the basis of the principles of 'Geneva 1', Vienna meeting and the recent New York meeting, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
The foreign minister indicated that he was briefed by the UN envoy on the outcome of his meetings with the Syrian opposition in Riyadh regarding the formation of a negotiating team, in addition to the next steps to be taken within the framework of the peace process to ensure a peaceful solution for the Syrian crisis. “The recent tensions that impacted the region negatively will not affect the operations that United Nations carries out alongside the international community to achieve a political solution in Geneva soon," he said. Al-Jubeir reiterated the Kingdom’s determination to continue extending its full support to the Syrian people in securing their rights and freedom, and bringing the changes that they aspired for to their country.
Al-Jubeir also affirmed the Kingdom's position toward finding a solution to the Syrian crisis based on the principles of Geneva 1, to form a transitional authority, draft a new constitution and hold elections as well as excluding Bashar Al-Assad from Syria's future government.
For his part, de Mistura pointed out that there is a clear determination on the Saudi side that the current regional tensions will not have any negative impact on the Vienna momentum and on the continuation of the political process that the UN, together with the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), intend to start in Geneva soon. “There was a clear determination by the Saudi side that current regional tensions would not have a negative impact on the momentum of the talks and on the continuation of the political process in Geneva. We cannot afford to lose this momentum despite what is going on in the region,” he added.
