Saudi Arabia, China upgrade relations to comprehensive strategic partnership

Riyadh (IINA) – Saudi Arabia and China issued here on Wednesday a joint communiqué, which calls for the establishment of comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
A day after a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Riyadh and his talks with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, and in compliance with the joint wish of the two countries to augment and deepen cooperation in all fields, the two sides decided to upgrade bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and China to a comprehensive strategic relation.
The joint communiqué, carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), revealed that the bilateral cooperation between the two countries covers six key areas, namely the political sphere; energy; practical cooperation; security area; cultural and humanitarian affairs; and regional and international affairs.
In the political sphere, the two sides confirm the mutual support for the vital interests of each other with the Saudi side confirms its firm commitment to one-China policy, while the Chinese side confirms its support for the Saudi side's efforts to preserve the security and stability of its country, develop its economy, improve the living standards of its people as well as supporting the Saudi side to play a greater role in the regional and international affairs.
With regard to energy, the two sides expressed their wish to continue strengthening cooperation in the field of energy and stressed the importance of oil market stability for the global economic stability.
In the area of practical cooperation, both sides agreed to activate the role of the Saudi-Chinese joint committee for cooperation in economic, trade, investment and technical fields, so as to boost the mechanism for practical cooperation in the fields of investment, infrastructure and telecommunications. They also expressede their appreciation of launching cooperation in the areas of space technology and peaceful use of nuclear power.
In the area of security, the two sides stressed their categorical rejection of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations which threatens peace and stability in various parts of the world and voiced their willingness to enhance security cooperation in this regard. They also confirmed their refusal to link terrorism with any religion or doctrine.
Concerning the cultural and humanitarian affairs, both sides agreed to encourage intercultural exchange at the official and public levels and to support the communication and cooperation in the media, health, education, scientific research and tourism, among others. They further decided to continue to exchange holding of cultural weeks and to actively participate in various cultural events to be held by either sides.
With respect to the regional and international affairs, the two sides emphasized the importance of achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and the UN relevant resolutions, to ensure the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to the establishment of their fully sovereign independent State with its capital in East Jerusalem. They also stressed the need to prevent the proliferation of all kinds of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), and expressed support for making the Middle East a region of WMD-Free Zone, in accordance with the relevant international resolutions.
Further, both sides asserted the need to finding a political settlement to the Syria issue as soon as possible with the full implementation of the Geneva 1 Communiqué. Furthermore, they affirmed their support for the Yemeni legitimate government as well as the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the Initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Yemen.
