Rabat (IINA) – Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) Dr Abdulaziz Altwaijri praised Sunday's declaration by the Vatican about its official recognition of Palestine as an independent state.
The Vatican announced on Saturday that the “Comprehensive Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine”, signed in June, has taken into full effect.
Dr Altwaijri said in a statement issued here on Sunday that the official recognition of Palestine as an independent state by the Vatican is "a just position toward the Palestinian people who have suffered too long under the Israeli brutal occupation and endured various forms of injustice, oppression and persecution."
The ISESCO director general called on the international community to work to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and enable the Palestinian people to live in an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
It is to be noted that the text of the agreement between Palestine and the Vatican, which is now in force, includes details about the status of the Palestine's Catholic Church, and explicitly refers to the "State of Palestine". The text of the agreement also confirms the Vatican’s support for a peaceful resolution to the Palestinian issue and the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in the context of the two-state solution.
