Jerusalem (IINA) – Some 50 U.S. charities have transferred around $224 million to Jewish settlements in the West Bank during the past five years, according to a report published Tuesday by Haaretz, the Hebrew newspaper.
These U.S.-based charities, known as 501(c)(3) organizations under the Internal Revenue Code, are granted tax-exempt status by American authorities and donors to them can claim a tax deduction on their gift.
This means that the United States is indirectly funding the Israeli settlement project, which was opposed by all US administrations over the past 48 years.
The report revealed that between 2009 and 2013, these organizations reported combined revenues of more than $281 million (over one billion shekels). Some $224 million of this income was transferred to the occupied territories as grants, mostly through Israeli non-profit groups.
The report also explained that the massive U.S. tax-exempt funds contribute to settlement development, used to purchase real estate in the West Bank including Jerusalem, and to extend a helping hand to Jewish families convicted of terrorism.
