Riyadh, (IINA) - The Syrian opposition groups, which are meeting here, discussed on Wednesday ways to reach a common position ahead of the possible peace negotiations with Syrian Regime Leader Bashar Al-Assad, Arab News reported.
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir welcomed the delegates and reiterated that Al-Assad could be ousted militarily if he does not step down peacefully. He then left the gathering to allow the groups to carry on their meeting, which was attended by some 100 delegates and discussed terrorism, a cease-fire, reconstruction, and the role of the UN.
The peace talks are expected by world powers to take place on January 1. The Syrian opposition delegates requested the presence of Al-Jubeir in the negotiations.
The representatives want the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces to unify all anti-Al Assad groups and ensure that a political solution is found to the conflict.
The talks were chaired by Abdul Aziz Sager, a Saudi who heads the independent Gulf Research Center in Geneva.
While not all groups were invited, the closed-door meeting marks the first time a broad range of Syrian political and armed opposition factions have come together since the conflict started in 2011.
There has been a growing diplomatic push for a resolution to the Syrian conflict, which has killed more than 250,000 people and forced millions away from their homes.
It is noteworthy that top diplomats from 17 countries, including key backers and opponents of Al-Assad, agreed last month in Vienna on a fixed calendar that would see a transitional government set up in six months and elections within 18 months.
