Listen To Refugees, first survey of Syrian refugees in Europe: Report

Berlin, (IINA) - A standardized survey, which was carried out among 889 Syrian refugees who took shelter in Germany between September 24 and October 2, showed that majority of Syrians are fleeing the brutal Syrian Regime led by Bashar Al-Assad than that of ISIS.
The survey, titled “Listen to Refugees”, asked the refugees about who they believe was responsible for shelling their homes. Refugees were able to name more than one party, and 74 percent of them believe that the Syrian regime was responsible for bombing their homes while 33 percent believe that ISIS is responsible. Other parties such as the Free Syrian Army (FSA) had an 18 percent, Al-Nusra Front 14 percent, Kurdish forces (YPG) 4 percent, and 8 percent believed that the International Coalition was responsible for the shelling.

The Huffington Post reported on the story saying: “Contrary to what you might read in the papers, it's not the media-grabbing brutality of ISIS that most people are fleeing from. It's the much larger scale, state-organized violence of the Assad regime that is driving most people from their homes”.
The Survey also reveals that 86 percent of the refugees feared being arrested or kidnapped, 77 percent feared being abducted by the Syrian Regime, while 42 percent feared being kidnapped by ISIS, 18 percent by Al-Nusra Front, 13 percent by FSA, and 8 percent by YPG.

The refugees were asked: “How should Syria be in the future in order for you to have the option to return?” 68 percent called for stopping the war, 52 percent said that Al-Assad must leave while 44 percent said that ISIS must leave. Only 8 percent of the refugees stated that they don’t want to return to Syria.

Around 33 percent of Syrians did not know which party is best suited to establish security in Syria, 26 percent said the International Coalition while 22 percent voted for the FSA.
The refugees were also asked regarding which internal events led to the current situation, and 79 percent believe that the reason was the Syrian authorities’ military response to the demonstrations, 31 percent say it was the rising influence of ISIS while 17 percent believe it is the military action taken by rebels.

The interviews were held in 12 centers that house incoming refugees as well as other refugee accommodation and refugee registration points in Berlin, Hanover, Bremen, Leipzig, and Eisenhüttenstadt. Surveyed individuals were interviewed in locations that are frequented by all refugee groups regardless of their political opinions and social characteristics. Surveyed individuals were approached upon entering or leaving registration centers and refugee housing. All self-declared Syrians were asked to participate in the questionnaire.
A combination of face-to-face interviews and computer-assisted self-completion of questionnaires using tablet computers (CAPI) was used. This ensured respondents’ confidence in the anonymity of the survey and allowed for the inclusion of illiterate respondents in the survey.
The Questions were selected in cooperation with experts of the current situation in Syria and translated into Arabic by specialists. The survey was carried out by 18 Syrian nationals.
