Rome, (IINA) - The international community has pledged support on Sunday for the UN-sponsored peace plan for a national unity government in Libya, DPA reported.
They also vowed aid in the fight against ISIS after representatives from Libya's rival factions met foreign ministers from around the world.
"I really hope that the process that we have brought forward by a decisive step today will continue in the next few days", Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.
The UN has been negotiating for a year to get country's two competing parliaments, the Libyan House of Representatives and the General National Congress, to come together.
The two sides set Wednesday as the target date for the signing of the peace agreement.
UN Libya envoy Martin Kobler stressed that as many of the key players as possible should be convinced to sign the deal before Wednesday, noting that the pact is merely the starting point for the work that has to be done.
The agreement envisages the creation of a national unity government based in Tripoli. It also calls for the formation of a state council with limited powers including members of the General National Congress, Libyan lawmakers reported. However, The UN did not confirm the pact’s contents yet.
In a related context, the international community pledged help in Libya’s fight against ISIS, which has taken control of the Mediterranean city of Sirte while the Libyan rivals were competing for power.
Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said: "We want to show that diplomacy is faster than terrorism".
Steinmeier also said that ISIS was a concern. "Every day's wait means that the humanitarian crisis grows and in the end the winner in Libya will be ISIS", the German foreign minister said.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said that ISIS was a danger for everyone, and the international community had to take on its global responsibility towards Libya.
