Brussels (IINA) – US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has said he believes Russia has the wrong strategy in Syria, warning that the Russians will soon begin to suffer from casualties in the war-torn country, news agencies reported.
Carter's remarks came at a press conference after a meeting of the defense ministers of the NATO member countries in Brussels on Thursday over the situation in Syria and Afghanistan.
The military campaign "will have consequences for Russia itself, which is rightly fearful of attacks," Carter said. "There's a pattern of saying one thing and doing another" by the Russians, he noted. "They said they were going to fight (Islamic State) but that doesn't match up with the targets."
Moscow denied Western accusations that it had mainly targeted Assad opponents, insisting its strikes have hit the infrastructure of the so-called Islamic State (IS) and other militant groups.
Russia's Foreign Ministry also said Moscow was willing to establish contact with the Free Syrian Army to discuss fighting IS "and other terrorist groups". But the Pentagon chief said the coalition forces fighting IS in Syria would not cooperate with Russia.
"We believe Russia has the wrong strategy," he said.
Carter stressed that NATO should not be distracted from Ukraine by the Syria crisis, and should ensure Russia sticks to agreements made in Minsk last year.
