Berlin, (IINA) - US Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday voiced cautious hope there may be a way to defuse the Israeli-Palestinian violence that has killed approximately 49 Palestinians and 9 Israelis this month, Reuters reported.
Kerry said that there were steps that could diminish the violence, noting that such measures need to be discussed with Jordanian and Palestinian officials. This came during an open conference after about four hours of talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"I would characterize that conversation as one that gave me a cautious measure of optimism that there may be ... a way to defuse the situation and begin to find a way forward".
"If parties want to try, and I believe they do, want to move to a de-escalation, there are a set of choices that are available", said Kerry following the meeting in Berlin in a joint news conference with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
It is noteworthy that the cause of this turmoil is the Jewish encroachment on Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, Islam's holiest site outside Saudi Arabia.
In a related context, Kerry made no reference to Netanyahu's suggestion this week that Haj Amin Al-Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem during the 1940s, persuaded Adolf Hitler to exterminate the Jews.
Netanyahu's comments have attracted broad criticism from Israeli opposition politicians and Holocaust experts, who accused the prime minister of distorting the historical record.
