Kanpur (IINA) - Nearly 250 people have been booked while 21 others, including two who were removing skin of the dead cow, arrested in connection with violence in Mainpuri which was triggered by the rumors of cow slaughter, Times of India newspaper reported.
Police sources said that an officer of the rank of deputy superintendent of police has also been suspended with immediate effect for alleged laxity. Violence erupted in Mainpuri, nearly 100 km from Agra, on Friday after two young men were nearly lynched over rumor of slaughtering a cow. Both were admitted to hospital with severe injuries while an autopsy of the cow's carcass later revealed that it had died of an ailment. Several police vehicles and public property were damaged in the violence; seven policemen were also injured. "The cow's postmortem was conducted by a team of veterinarians to ascertain the cause of its death. It revealed that the cow was not slaughtered but died of a disease called 'afra'. As per its owner, the cow had died 24 hours ago of the disease," Mainpuri district magistrate Chandra Pal said.
The mob caught the men accused of slaughtering the cow, placed its carcass on the road and staged a blockade. When police and PAC personnel arrived at the scene and tried to rescue the accused, the mob pelted stone. The situation soon turned volatile, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge after which violence broke out. The policemen then reportedly fired several rounds in air. Police had a tough time rescuing the two, who suffered injuries and were later admitted to district hospital amidst tight security."As soon as we received information about tension in Karhal area, we rushed to the spot and took both the accused in custody. But by then hundreds of people had gathered near Palokhara Bumba, where Shafiq and Lalla were caught by locals removing the skin of a dead animal. They then started assaulting the duo. A heated argument followed for 15 minutes after which the agitators turned violent. They did not even spare us. We pleaded them and tried to bundle Shafiq and Lalla in the police jeep, but they started pelting stones and attacked me as well as other cops," Police officer Jai Narain said.
He added, “The attack continued for nearly half an hour, and they later set afire police jeep in which we were trying to escape from the spot and another vehicle parked nearby. They were demanding us to handover the duo so that they can punish them instantly. The crowd then placed the carcass it in the middle of the road and later indulged in arson.”
