Malmo, Sweden (IINA) - Concluding lengthy fasting hours in Ramadan, Muslims in the Southwestern Swedish city of Malmo have celebrated `Eid al-Fitr with special festivals where Muslim citizens enjoyed food and music together, OnIslam reported.
The celebration, held last Saturday, was the fourth in a row to mark `Eid al-Fitr.
After special prayers to mark the day, festivities and merriment start with visits to the homes of friends and relatives.
Meeting together in Folkets Park, Muslims enjoyed the sun as well as music, a circus area, stand-up comedy and lots of food.
“We live in a multicultural society, and we need to have places were we can all meet one another,” said Festival Director Andreas Hasslert from the Ibn Rushd Association.
“This is our way of inviting everyone to a big community festival. It’s full of people, both Muslims and non-Muslims, all countries are represented here and everyone’s welcome.”
Muslims make up between 450,000 and 500,000 of Sweden’s nine million people, according to the US State Department report in 2011.
In 2013, around 300 hate crimes against Muslims were reported in Sweden.
Such incidents are on the rise according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Brottsförebyggande rÄdet).
