Jeddah (IINA) – The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has criticized the statement made by Iraq’s Vice President Nouri Al-Maliki to Afaq Wisal TV on July 17, claiming that Saudi Arabia is a sponsor and supporter of terrorism and called for it to be placed under international trusteeship.
The General Secretariat considered the statement irresponsible, especially coming from a senior official of the Iraqi Government. It also said that the statement contravenes the Charter of the OIC, which calls for strengthening of relations among OIC member states on the basis of justice, mutual respect, good neighborliness and non-interference in the domestic affairs of other member states.
The Secretariat said that these claims are absurd in light of the effective and significant role played by the Kingdom in fighting terrorism and extremism at the national, regional and international levels, as well as in the OIC's ongoing effort in this regard.
The Secretariat stated that Maliki's statement is unjustifiable and runs against the spirit and principle of cooperation and solidarity amongst OIC member states and peoples. Rather the statement feeds into the sectarian and denominational agenda at a time when concerted efforts must be made by all OIC countries to face up the common challenges; combat terrorism, extremist ideology and sectarian division.
