Jeddah (IINA) – The Fifth Extraordinary Islamic Summit on Palestine and Al-Quds (Jerusalem) will be held in Jakarta on March 6-7. The summit is being convened amid great challenges facing the Palestinian issue mainly because of the Israeli intransigence and ongoing violations against Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem, according to an OIC press statement.
The Summit derives its importance from its endeavor to restore the Palestinian question to the forefront of political action, in view of the difficult situation in
the region. Ambassador Samir Bakr Diab, OIC assistant secretary general for Palestine and Jerusalem, said that the Summit of OIC Heads of State, under the theme of “Unity for a Just and Lasting Solution”, will be looking at ways to unite the efforts of member states to restore momentum to the Palestinian question, in light of the stalemate resulting from Israel’s riding roughshod over international treaties, agreements and resolutions. He added that holding the Summit in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, has its locational significance, being held in the largest Muslim country in terms of population. It is also an important and unprecedented milestone in mobilizing the wider Muslim community behind the Palestinian cause, particularly in light of the difficult and serious situation of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
Diab said it would send a clear message of commitment on the part of Muslim Ummah to the collective and un-ceased responsibility towards the Aqsa Mosque and its protection. Ambassador Bakr stressed that the Summit would seek to deploy all impetus and resources to promote the OIC's work in international fora to come up with a unified international position. This would also support Palestinians in their quest to recover their legitimate rights, notably the establishment of an independent and contiguous state, with Jerusalem as its capital.
The first day of the summit will feature preparatory meetings of senior officials, followed by a meeting of foreign ministers. The latter will submit the outcome of the deliberations of the first day to the Heads of Islamic State on March 7. Ambassador Bakr underscored that the Jakarta summit would be a key tributary of the 13th Islamic Summit, which will be held in Istanbul in April. The latter will follow up the outcome of Jakarta Summit. He pointed out that recent months have seen momentum in working for the Palestinian cause to keep abreast of developments unfolding in the Palestinian arena. Jakarta hosted a series of activities and conferences on the serious situation in the Holy city of Jerusalem, in cooperation with the OIC and the United Nations. "The OIC will continue its diplomatic engagement to maintain coordination and support for the Palestinian cause,” he added.
