Rabat (IINA) – The International Conference on Borders Security, which is a joint initiative by the United Nations Center for Counter-terrorism (UNCCT) and the Global Counter-terrorism Forum (GCTF), began on Tuesday in the Moroccan city of El Jadida, with the participation of representatives of more than 30 countries.
The two-day event discusses flaws and vulnerabilities in the area of border security and its management systems, as well as the ways to prevent the movement of terrorists and criminals across the porous borders. It also aims at finding ways to enhance cooperation and exchange of information between countries for a better cooperative border management and enhanced trans-border security.
Charki Draiss, Moroccan Delegate-Ministry to the Minister of Interior, said in a speech at the opening of the conference, that the border has become today, more than ever, a source of serious threats by terrorist groups, cross-border criminal gangs that smuggle drugs and goods, illegal immigrants and arms dealers.
Draiss stressed the paramount importance of bilateral cooperation among nations, especially between neighboring countries, as well as regional cooperation, in a collective and effective response to security threats within the context of the principle of shared responsibility.
The Moroccan minister pointed out that the attainment of this goal is still encounter many difficulties, including the porous nature of many international borders that can simply be crossed by the terrorist and criminal groups, using new methods and devices nowadays. He emphasized the need to boost the exchange of information and the use of new tools to secure the borders, including satellites.
