Chattanooga, Tennessee (IINA) - A heavily armed gunman has killed four US Marines and injured several others at two US Navy buildings in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to media reports.
Shooter Muhammad Youssef Abdulaziz, who also died in the incident, had several weapons and a residence was being searched as part of the investigation, said Ed Reinhold, FBI special agent in charge.
The attack took place at two military buildings in Chattanooga. All of the killings took place at the second location, approximately seven miles from the first site, a recruiting center.
After opening fire on the building, the gunman then fled the scene in a silver Ford Mustang convertible and was pursued by Chattanooga police, Reinhold told reporters.
He was shot dead after a gunfight at a US Navy reserve centre about seven miles (10 km) away on Amnicola Highway.
The US Marines confirmed in a statement that there were "four Marine fatalities" at the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Centre in Chattanooga.
They said one Marine Corps recruiter was wounded but was later released from hospital. Two other people are believed to have been treated for injuries.
Hours after the first attack, armed police raided the house where he lived, a few miles outside Chattanooga in Hixson, and an AP reporter said two women were led away in handcuffs.
From his side U.S. Attorney Bill Killian said the attack was being investigated as possible "domestic terrorism." The FBI cautioned that it was "premature to speculate on the motives of the shooter at this time."
Also, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch noted that the FBI will lead a national security investigation into the shooting.
"I have directed the FBI to take the lead in the national security investigation of this heinous attack on members of our military. The U.S. Attorney’s office and department prosecutors are also actively involved," she said in a statement released on Thursday.
