Founder of Egypt’s Middle East News Agency dies at 97

Abdel-Qader Mohammed Hatem

Cairo (IINA) – Egypt's former Minister of Culture and Information Abdel-Qader Mohammed Hatem died on Tuesday, at the age of 97.
At the end of 1955, Abdel-Qader was entrusted with the establishment of the first news agency in the Arab world (the Middle East News Agency).
According to Petra News Agency, he assumed various positions, including responsibility for the Radio and Information in 1958, then became Minister of Culture and National Guidance (Ministry of Information).
Abdel-Qader was reappointed minister of information in the early 1970s. He oversaw Egypt’s media strategy during the 1973 October War.
The last position he held was that of supervisor general over the Specialized National Councils – scientific advisory bodies affiliated to the presidency, comprising experts in different disciplines, who can help in the formulation of the state public policy.
