Khartoum (IINA) – Sudan has commended the stance of South Africa for extending the invitation to Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir to participate in the 25th Ordinary Summit of African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government held in Johannesburg on Sunday and Monday, Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported.
At a press conference held here on Monday upon the return of President Al-Bashir and his accompanying delegation from Johannesburg, Sudan's Foreign Minister Prof Ibrahim Ghandour expressed Khartoum's appreciation for President Jacob Zuma's statement that Al-Bashir and all African presidents were guests of South Africa.
Ghandour said that the stance of the South African government was strong and that its Foreign Minister had also affirmed that Al-Bashir's participation was an honor for South Africa and they were happy with his participation.
"Sudan, as a member of the African Union, has the right to take part in AU conferences and summits and by this right President Al-Bashir has effectively participated in the Johannesburg Summit," he added.
On Sunday,  a South African high court had ordered the government to prevent Bashir from departing the country until it issued a ruling Monday on whether the government was required to arrest him and hand him over to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
